Much of what I have learned in life, has been through sports! I started skating when I was four years old and then learned to play hockey. Growing up, I played a number of sports. Hockey was my favorite and has been a driving force for me ever since I was four. Over the years, it has taught me to be disciplined, to manage my time wisely, prioritize my goals, be responsible, be resilient, to accept disappointment and to understand the importance of making sacrifices. One thing is for sure is that through all these life lessons and obstacles, I have learned that having mindfulness and mental toughness helps me get through it all.
I think as part of a team, it is more important to look at the bigger picture than to just score goals and put up points. I am a two way forward, always hard on the backcheck and forecheck. I have a sense of the right time to play up in the play or to start the play. I feel I have a sense of knowing how to slow the play down and create time and space which can lead to scoring opportunities. I see myself as a playmaker who scans the ice to see who is open before I make a play. I am a fast skater with great passing abilities. I try to develop skills that will help my team keep possession of the puck and give us scoring opportunities such as being physical, screening the goalie, protecting the puck, putting the puck on the tape in addition to developing speed and edgework. That is what I think separates me from everyone else.
In addition to hockey, as a freshman in high school, I was a member of the varsity golf team. I started playing golf when I was eight years old. My dad would take me to the driving range to hit some golf balls. I then attended golf camps and took lessons from a PGA pro. Ever since, I have loved playing golf in the summer with my family and my friends. Golf has taught me to be patient, be honest and to be centered. It has shown me that practicing repeatedly creates results. It has shown me that you must be able to adapt to circumstances because not every shot will go your way and sometimes you must come up with creative solutions to get out of a jam.
As a student, I try to put these life lessons into action. It is demanding work to balance being a student and an athlete. I have managed to be on the high honor roll and honor roll in addition to being inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Academics comes first and I try to make sure my grades are on point. When it comes to my future, I have goals and aspirations of playing hockey at the highest level and am committed to achieving excellence wherever I have the opportunity.
