Personal Statement

My name is Tanner Fennell and I am a class of 2023 left-handed defenseman from Ottawa, Ontario. My goal is to obtain a university degree in either health sciences or business while playing Division 1 NCAA hockey.

I laced up my first pair of hockey skates at the age of 3 and fell in love with the game instantly.  I have always played at the highest level of hockey and I have consistently been a top defenseman on my team. I have also played on all the top ranked select teams from the Ottawa area. I am currently the team captain  playing for the Kemptville 73's U18 AAA and I am actively participating / affiliated with the Junior A club team.  This season, I am posting up to 26 minutes on ice per game and I am leading the defensemen on my team in minutes, as well as in points. I am a versatile two-way player with strong puck skills and vision of the ice earning me top line minutes on special teams. I am looking forward to leading the 73’s U18 team to an impressive season this year.

Not only do I have a strong work ethic on the ice, but I am also a high achiever in the classroom.  Academics, like hockey, have always come naturally to me. I had completed 9.5 NCAA Core Credit after Grade 10, meanwhile achieving a 38.0 Quality Score on these courses.  I am currently in the 11th grade at St. Mark's Catholic High School in Greely, ON and have achieved a 4.0 GPA in my last two years of high school. I am drawn to playing in the NCAA because being a student athlete would allow me to pursue my academic goals while playing the game that I love.

  • 2023 Kemptville 73's Junior A Hockey Club (CCHL) (Junior A)
  • Founded in 1969 as the Kemptville Comets, the community began its passion for Junior hockey. The team later changed it’s name in 1973, taking on the year as its name – the “73’s”. The team became very successful, including the famous 38-0-4 undefeated season in 1996-97. The “73’s” are now one of the newest Junior “A” teams in the Central Canada Hockey League. Kemptville is one of the fastest growing communities in the Ottawa Valley. Its new North Grenville Municipal Centre includes two ice pads that provide for figure skating, public skating and of course the 6 am Initiation practices and late night seniors hockey. The facility also has community halls, a theatre and the municipal government all under one roof. And while this beautiful facility has all the modern age amenities, it is the simple sheet of ice that will continue to provide endless hours for all to learn, grow and share together… as they have for the past 150 years. Come visit Kemptville… just a slapshot away from our Parliament Buildings or the St. Lawrence River… experience more than a century of hockey traditions, a warm apple turnover and good conversation.
  • 2021 Kemptville 73's Junior A Hockey Club (CCHL) (U18 AAA)
  • The teams participating in the league will operate under the current HEO Minor Hockey rules and discipline codes. Games will be hosted through showcases on Monday nights and Saturday’s to increase the players exposure to scouts for future opportunities in Junior, NCAA and OHL. HEO Minor and the CCHL are excited to move forward with this model of delivery. LEAGUE MANDATE The HEO U18 AAA League is a minor hockey league following minor hockey governance, rules and discipline. 1. To provide a league for teams of players at the designated U18 AAA level. 2. To promote fair play and sportsmanship, and to develop the skills of the players in the League, through the provision of a safe and competitive environment. 3. To exercise general care and direction over players, teams, officials and executives of the League to ensure compliance with the League’s Constitution, By-Laws and Playing Rules & Regulations

Events

  • Kemptville 73’s Junior A Evaluation Camp
  • 5/14/22 to 5/15/22
  • The Kemptville 73’s held their Import and Prospects Camp on May 14th & 15th, 2022 in Kemptville. As a qualified player, I was honoured by being the only rookie player offered a committed Jr. A roster spot at this camp for the 2022-23 season. The Kemptville 73's are located just 30 minutes south of Ottawa and have had a lot of success moving players to the higher levels of hockey (NCAA, CIS, OHL) including two former 73's players, who were drafted by the NHL in the spring following the season in which they played for the club. The team's goal, is to help their players achieve their hockey goals. The 73's work diligently to promote all of their players to higher levels of hockey (NCAA, CIS, Major Junior, and NHL). The CCHL is widely considered one of the top Junior A leagues in Canada and regularly sends teams to the Centennial Cup, which is Canada's National Championships. With its close proximity to the Eastern United States it widely scouted and sends numerous players yearly to the NCAA.
  • Camp/Event
  • Ottawa 67’s - Major Junior - Open 2022 Development Camp
  • 5/06/22 to 5/07/22
  • Among multiple OHL development camp offers, I decided to stick to one team, that being my home town team the Ottawa 67's. I was invited as part of a 31 player squad consisting of both Ottawa 67’s draftees and free agents. I attended as a free agent. We underwent individual player skill demonstrations, and media sessions before taking to the ice for the Top Prospects Game. We were split into two teams coached by the Ottawa 67's staff. It was a very high energy game that provided the staff and scouts opportunities to evaluate players they have for the coming Major Junior season.
