My goal for college hockey is to compete at the highest level possible, whether that be college hockey or beyond. To do this has been my aspiration ever since I started playing hockey. What makes me a good candidate for your team is that I am a natural leader who stays focused and is intent on developing myself and my teammates. I am coachable and conform well to implemented systems in games as well. I know how to demand respect from my teammates as well as lift them up when they maybe have made a bad play. I also attribute being in the IB program at school to my hockey IQ on the ice and quick decision making. Through IB classes I have also gained a broadened perspective of how to handle myself under pressure and under stressful situations.
As an individual, I like to be involved in my community and help out in ways I see fit to my skill set. For example, I am on the mountain bike team and race competitively at my high school. This gives me the opportunity to go back to my middle school and lead mountain bike team practices. I get to know the younger kids, give them advice, and share any experiences I have had that may help to prepare them for the steps ahead. This process is incredibly rewarding to me as I am able to be a role model and encourage people who are in the exact position I was when I was their age. I am also using my knowledge of American Sign Language to create instructional bike fix tutorials for deaf people on YouTube. One of the reasons I decided to go this route with my IB project is that after I took an ASL class I began to realize how underrepresented deaf people are, not just in my community, but also the world. Completing this project will be satisfying to me because I will make biking more accessible, and easier to participate in for the deaf community.
