Hello – My name is Christian Bailey, I’m currently a junior at Lake Braddock Secondary School and I’m a hockey player. Growing up, I tried many sports, tae kwon do, baseball, fencing, but hockey is my true passion. My mom used to joke that if she’d let me sleep with my skates on, I would. My love of hockey started when I watched my cousins up North playing it. From that point on I bugged my parents until they signed me up for skating lessons. These lessons were taught by a figure skater, which in the end helped my edges tremendously. A couple months later they enrolled me in a “learn to play” program and I played my first season of house league when I was nine years old. The next season I convinced my parents to let me try out for the travel team and I made the lower A team. From that season on, I’ve always worked hard to make the highest-level team I could. I took early morning lessons before school started, participated in skills camps and went to lots of stick and pucks. Because of my skating, coaches would put me on forward and defense depending on where they needed me. After playing two seasons of AA, I finally made my first AAA team (Team Maryland) when I was 14. For my first season of AAA I played left wing. I worked hard and learned a lot about the game that season.
In the DC Metro area where I’m from, there are only two local AAA teams, Team Maryland in Rockville, Maryland and the Washington Little Caps in Arlington, Virginia. Driving to the rink in Rockville for Team Maryland practices would take on average two hours each way. It was hard on my parents to get me there so the next season I tried out for the Washington Little Caps instead, and made the team. After starting out as a forward, the team was in need of a good defenseman, so I filled the role.
Over the past several months I have been doing a lot of research on exercise and nutrition. I have a membership to a giant sports complex in the area called The Saint James and absolutely fell in love with working out there. I had my own upper/lower, strength and endurance split that I use every day besides my two rest days per week. I did my own research into nutrition and supplementation and now use a 7-day a week meal plan to get my body in the best shape I can. Since the quarantine started in my area however, I have been using a different, at-home workout, that is adapted to the equipment that I have. This workout program was provided by one of the strength coaches at The Saint James, Matt Weldy. He has been one of the most helpful people in my fitness journey and in getting and staying in the best shape I can.
I would love to go to a college or play on a junior team anywhere in the East Coast area. I am interested in studying political science or foreign affairs, and eventually would like to apply for an internship at a government agency here in the DC area. Along this career path, becoming a member of the military would also be a helpful experience in the industry I want to enter. My goal is to play juniors and eventually NCAA div. 3 while getting the best education that I can to get the career that I want.
