From a very early age, my father instilled in me a desire to always do my very best in everything I do. My father is a Marine and a life-long police officer. I have watched him live a life of service to others. Through my father's dedication to helping others, he, of course, had little spare time to spend with his family. Therefore, as a police officer's son, I have had to mature a great deal faster than a typical kid. I have watched my father face many difficult experiences with his grace and positive attitude. As a young man, I use that drive to accomplish every goal I set forth for myself. My two major goals in life are to focus on further developing and strengthening my hockey game and I aspire to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a network engineer.
When I reflect back on how I became an ice hockey player, it was a rather unique experience. I like to say, "Ice hockey found me rather than me finding ice hockey." Coach Dave just happened to see me practicing ice skating at our local rink and recruited me on the spot. Coach Dave cut my hockey stick down to the proper size for me and told me to put the cut-off end of the hockey stick under my pillow and one day, I might have the opportunity to play professionally. He became my biggest inspiration at age 9. I fell in love with the game of ice hockey right then and there. All I wanted was a chance to play ice hockey and Coach Dave not only provided that chance to me, but also inspired me to continue to want to improve my hockey skills with each ice time opportunity. In 2017, a police officer who also was a hockey player tragically past away while on duty and each time I feel the ice beneath my blades, I am grateful and blessed to play in honor of him.
As far as what type of ice hockey player am I? I assure you that I play for the sake of the team. Through my years on various different travel teams, I have experienced team members who pass the puck and work as a coherent team. I have also played on teams where there was a huge issue with puck "hogging." Personally, I think the team is best served when you have a balance of strong players and on the ice, they must work together in unity. Each Spring brings on tryouts each year and through these experiences, I have learned the necessary life skill to accept critical feedback to make me not only a stronger player, but a more, well-rounded person in life. I make a point to enjoy every minute I get to be on the ice. Just like life, ice time is a precious commodity.
