Personal Statement

My motivation for success is driven by gratitude. I love my parents who instilled the basics of leadership, commitment, and being a good person. I’m grateful for my older brother who pushes me both academically and on the lacrosse field. I appreciate all of my coaches, teammates, and friends who taught me fundamentals, competition, and diversity.

However, my motivation for success grew when I understood that everything could be taken away. My friend Dominic and I often talked about many of the same goals on the field and in the classroom. When he passed away from cancer my Freshman year, it made me push myself harder. He would want me to push, grind, and to realize “our” goals. It motivates me to be the best goalie, the best academically, and the best person I can be every day.

Before his passing Dom saw me realize my goal of becoming Medina’s starting Varsity goalie as a Freshman. I hold his memory with me and I am grateful to those who helped and continue to help and push me to reach my future goals.

  • 2018 Training Notes: Overall: Sammy, you were a pleasure to work with. We were both impressed with how quick your hands are. You do an excellent job of controlling rebounds. Moving forward, we’d like you get your body to catch up to your hands. We’ve listed the areas that need improvement below. Spend some time improving these and you will see significant results. Areas of Improvement: Tilt Butt Up and Back- Tilt your butt up and back in your stance. Doing so will force you to lean forward more. When you lean forward, it will be much easier to explode to the shots. The shots that went in during the clinic were mostly shots to the corners that were out of reach in your current stance, as your back is straight and your butt is sunk low. Doing so locks your legs in place and makes it very hard to move to the shot on time. Make that change to your stance and you’ll reach every shot (see “Stance” section of video) Get set Earlier Get set before the shooter winds up- this will give you more time to track the ball. The more time that you have to focus before the ball is released, the more consistently you will make saves. At the moment, you’re jumping into your stance as the shooter winds up. Doing so leaves you in a tense, locked-up stance, and due to the timing, you won’t see the shot until it’s halfway to you (see “Outside of 8 Yards” section of video) Wait for shot (Deep shots)- After you get set in your stance, wait for the shot to leave the shooters stick before attacking and driving your head to it. You have a tendency to sink into your knees as the shooter winds up. When you sink into your knees, you lock your body in place and have to rely solely on your hands to make the save. Get set, and hold your stance while the shot is being taken so that you can move your body to the ball as well (see “Outside of 8 yards” section of the video) Move Earlier on 1v1’s- Practice the “Read him and Beat him” technique. Read the shooters shoulders and beat him to one of the four corners of the net that he has to shoot at. If you read the shooters shoulders, and move earlier, you will make significantly more saves. Major emphasis on moving early; move earlier than you are comfortable moving (see “Inside 8 Yards” section of video) Path to Results: Outside of the goal, practice adjusting your bottom hand in your stance. It takes time and repetition to make lasting changes to your stance. Once the change feels comfortable, take extra shots from teammates outside of practice/games 1-2 times per week. Work on getting set earlier, waiting for the shoot before moving (deep shots), and moving earlier on 1v1’s
