Being able to be picked to play for Team 91 Texas, become a starter at close defense for the team by my second tournament, then be one of the few freshman to be chosen on Varsity lacrosse for my school and to win district champs is one of my most recent accomplishments as a student-athlete. Just two years ago I wasn't thought to be a player who would play for a team such as Team 91, or even yet become a starter at a JV level (much less start on Varsity), it was something I had to work non-stop for. In every lacrosse season I continue to grow my skills and pass people who I admire on the various teams I play for through my desire to become even better than them. Without a doubt I grow non stop as an athlete, only because I know what it takes through my knowledge of what it's like to be on a team that lost every game, and on a team that has had a high success rate. No matter the rate of success of my team, I have played my heart out, it's a personal pride of mine to prove to only myself how much of a struggle I can place on each team that has to go against mine. Having to lead a team that was un-likely to win, and continue to progressively get better showed my integrity and dedication that I put in through using everything that was against me as a opportunity to get better because of our losses. This was how I was fortunate enough to have been seen by the Team 91 Texas head coach, and then get selectively picked by the Team 91 NY and MA head coaches/directors to play for Team 91.
Another major part of me being such a good student/athlete was from my parents, I grew up learning to respect others, and this implied to coaches more than anything. I always would and will respect my coaches past and present. What I got in return was the ability to learn from my mistakes and take critisism from the coaches who would train me. In other words, because of the way I have been raised, I am able to be a very coachable player, on and off the field academically, and athletically. My confidence and leadership grew most when I would go to face team from New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania etc, for the first time, and I learned the difference in skill was non existent, despite being a player who learned lacrosse in Texas. Playing in some of the largest and most recognized lacrosse tournaments there is to offer and be able to excel with flying colors proved I have what it takes to play on new levels, and eventually College programs, and still yet I don't feel close to fulfilling how much better I can become as a student athlete. I know what it means to be committed to a team, to continue to be a leader for a team through tough loss, and most importantly I know I am a player that will always be able to learn and grow from those willing to teach.
