I am super excited now as my junior year is coming to an end. I am going to rowing nationals in Sarasota next week to be the coxswain of the varsity team. I love the challenge of bringing my team closer together as we strive for victory. Casitas rowing is not a big team and Ojai is not a big city. I am sure competition will be tough but as coxswain, it’s my responsibility to strategize and motivate and get everyone to work well together.
I played competitive tennis for years before I started rowing. I enjoyed it and played for my high school team as well. One summer I tried rowing because I wanted to stay physically fit. I am not that tall and my coach asked me if I would try being the coxswain. Truthfully, it wasn’t what I had in mind. I wanted to row. I put those thoughts in check because being a good team player means that you do whatever is best for the team, not what you want. I have to say that being the coxswain turned out to be a great fit for me. I took to it right away. I love public speaking and I believe working in a group and having a leadership role is a strength of mine. I participate in student council at my school. I was also the student who was nominated in my freshman year to take part in the Ronald Reagan leadership program. I was also asked to MC the year end showcase at my high school. Basically, I like to work with other and I easily formed great relationships with my team and I have the utmost respect for my coach.
I would love to go to college in New York, Florida, or California. I would also like to continue rowing there. It’s a great thing when something finds you that you weren’t expecting, that‘s how I became a coxswain. Maybe I will see you in Sarasota at nationals!
