I strive to challenge myself academically and athletically, and I base my success on my own progress. Instead of comparing myself to other students, I work my hardest to achieve improvement for myself. My goal isn't perfection, it's about getting as close as I can to optimal improvement. My transcript shows that upward trend and my erg times certainly do as well. I began my junior year spring season with a time of 6:54.6 and finished it off with 6:33.0 because of the work I had put into building my athletic base in other sports throughout the year. The previous summer, I weighed 245 lbs at the start, and throughout a summer of rowing and biking to and from practice for roughly a 30-mile round trip, I ended the summer weighing 220 lbs. That strong aerobic base began compounding throughout my cross-country and swim seasons, leaving me in the perfect place to improve for crew season in the spring. I finished off my junior year at 195 lbs, and have started the same effort-based summer training plan as last summer, except with a much stronger starting point. On July 26th I beat the American 15-16 slide erg one minute piece record, finishing with 384m, a 1:18.1 split with an average stroke rate of 40-45.
In essence, what I'm trying to get at, is that I am committed to becoming the best rower, student, and friend that I can be. And the only way to get there is to start from nothing, and work my hardest to improve to the highest peak of my potential.
