Rowing is my passion. I started as a 7th grader in a "Learn to Erg" class. While I had doubts about how much I would like the sport, it didn't take long before I became fast friends with my classmates, bonding with them over who’s the fastest and who gets the best fish game score. I've been committed to crew ever since. Though I've played other sports, I am physically suited for rowing and love going hard on the water because it is so rewarding. Being a part of the team is my favorite part of high school. I enjoy supporting my teammates as they finish their 2ks and cheering for our Light 8 and Freshmen 8 as they pass the dock.
While Midwestern weather makes it challenging to train on the water as much as I would like, I take full advantage of every season to work hard and commit to getting faster. Winter training allows me to maintain my bond with my team; I see the spring training season like a ladder, with each day presenting a chance to increase my competitive edge, whether through form, fitness, or wellbeing. Training in this environment has taught me the most crucial aspect of rowing: maintaining a positive and determined mindset.
Academically, I strive to do my best in every subject. Throughout high school, I've opted for mostly honors coursework, and I'm proud of my success in the classroom. While the demands of school have gotten tougher each year with more complex assignments and increased workload, I view these challenges as opportunities. I know my mind is as trainable for grasping and applying new knowledge as my body is for rowing. I'm naturally curious and love asking questions; I cannot wait to discover what piques my interest in college.
Between my commitment to school and rowing, my free time is slim, but I take full advantage of it by giving back to my community and taking on personal projects that interest me. Recently, I joined Peer Jury, a local program that gives teens who have committed wrongdoings the opportunity to learn through community service and reflection instead of juvenile detention. Even when I unwind, I like to be active. I recently built a motorized bike and am working on a plan to build a go-kart.
Rowing has taught me how to give my all to achieve my goals. The sacrifices I've made, like spending my Friday nights Erging with novices prove that like most things in life, I get back as much as I put in. It’s rewarding to apply myself and give my fullest to everything I do and each person I encounter. It's a lesson that inspires me to set new goals and a mindset I take into the world every day.
