My name is Evan Curtin, and I am a Junior at Phillips Academy Andover from North Andover, Massachusetts. I am sixteen years old and have been rowing for the last two and a half years. Since freshmen year I have been dedicated to rowing. I love every aspect of the sport, from the challenging 2k erg tests to the teamwork necessary for a boat to be in perfect synchronization. At every regatta and practice, the discipline and endurance needed to make a boat fly brings a smile to my face. What I love most about crew is the determination and grit it takes to be on the water. Every day, the sport challenges me in a new way, pushing me to new limits that I had never previously reached. Rowing has improved my body both physically and mentally, engaging my mind with the fiery yet peaceful passion to persevere through each stroke. Crew has helped me in many ways on and off the water, and I hope to find a college to fit the next step, both academically and athletically, that will help me continue to grow in leadership, teamwork, and skill.
Athletically I focus on crew, but I have also run cross country and played soccer, baseball, and club basketball. Outside of athletics and academics at Phillips Academy Andover, I love to sing. I am the captain of two a cappella groups and had the lead roles in my school musical the last few years. I write articles for my school newspaper and am involved with several affinity groups, such as MOSAIC, my school's mixed heritage group, and YES+, a group dedicated to delivering positive sex education. I regularly lead tours to prospective students and their families, and I am involved with my school's alumni in a committee that sets up events throughout the year.
