My goal in college is to be a student athlete. My academic strengths lie in math and science (especially biology). But I am also talented in the arts. I used to play the trumpet for my school's musical ensemble, and I am one of 8 Boston-area high school students chosen out of hundreds of applicants to the STEAM Team Fellowship at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. I also volunteer once a week in emergency radiology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. And without fail I make time for my friends. For example, even though I have 4 tests this coming Monday and Tuesday, I took two hours today to attend a farewell lunch for one of my friends who is leaving the team. I am a good and loyal friend, and my friendships give me a lot of happiness. Being on a rowing team has introduced me to a lot of fun and hardworking guys who know have to have fun without doing bad things.
I started rowing in CRI in the Spring of 2018 by participating in a non-competitive rowing class called Crew League. The Australian coach I had in crew league called me the "king of the erg," and recommended that I try out for novices. The tryouts of the Fall of 2018 were extremely competitive, and I did not make the novice team with a 2:18 1k, but was selected off the wait list. After rigorous work and dedication at CRI and at the gym, I became top-choice for the Spring novice team in the Spring of 2019 , selected as the athlete who had made "the greatest improvement" (despite a back injury), and I was a top-choice athlete for the Fall 2019 varsity team, after the most competitive tryouts in the boat club's recent history. I am not tall, but I have built up so much muscle and endurance that now I overpower many of my teammates who are much taller than me. My coach, Trevor, who will be training for the Olympics in the Spring, is always choosing me as an example of fitness and core strength for the others to follow. My current goal is to make consistent improvements in my technique, so I can make it into one of the top boats in the Spring of 2020. I am a good candidate for any team because of my strength, my work ethic, my determination to improve, and my friendliness. Everyone in my team loves me, and they now respect me a lot because they see how my work ethic makes up for my height.
