As most Brazilian kids, I was immersed in soccer at a young age. I grew up listening to comparisons between Ronaldo's finishing and Kaká's control, while I watched Neymar's dribbling and Coutinho's precision take over the conversation. I quickly absorbed this cultural enthusiasm for soccer, assimilating the game as a defining part of my identity.
Nonetheless, as I grew older, I encountered a bittersweet realization. Even though soccer is in the essence of my Brazilian identity, my academic life is just as significant. I utilize the same hard-work and determination in the classroom and on the pitch. The same way that I am grateful for my trophies and medals, I take pride in my school work, looking forward to report cards and parent-teacher conferences. During the day I am fully-focused in being a student, but once the bell rings, I race out of the class (sometimes already in full soccer gear), eager to be the first on the pitch. In all, I am a student-athlete that strives to combine my Brazilian passion for soccer with my American academic ambitions.
