Personal Statement

Respectively, Athletes around the world will say they are hardworking and perfect for your school and athletic program. However, when it gets tough and adversity hits them where it hurts many will crumble. I’ve been put in countless hours putting myself in uncomfortable training situations and maintaining a 4.0 GPA for as long as I can remember. All to achieve my goals of becoming the BEST soccer player in the world while also elevating my teammates. Despite this mindset, I understand there is still much to learn and grow from and am open to anyone’s perspective, and lessons. Let’s get to work.
-Damien Cervantes

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • LCYSA Camp
  • 1/25/20 to 1/26/20
  • With having proper training for a bit and getting back into competitive soccer after months out due to injury. I felt confident in my abilities. Working with Coach Alex Reyes and being watched by many local colleges I was ready to rise to the occasion. I knew what I could do and had the mental capacity to do it. I learned that I could give top varsity players and college prospects a tough time.
  • Camp/Event
  • EXACT Sports: West Coast Boys Academic 50 ID Camp
  • 6/27/19 to 6/29/19
  • After a year of high school and going into my sophomore year feeling I had really improved as a player I had made contact with several coaches prior including Joey O'Keefe at Westcliff University. I had learned that College Recruiting was more about building a relationship with the coach than anything. I learned what to say to them when first meeting them and then the possible next steps to the recruting process. Unfortunately, on the first day I obtained a Level 2 pull on my hamstring sending me home and upon a whole new journey that would strengthen myself not only physically but mentally.
  • Camp/Event
  • El Paso Locomotive Player Development Program
  • 3/29/19 to 4/25/19
  • While competing with top players from the top clubs in El Paso and training with club coach Salvador "Chava" Mercado and top coach Alex Reyes I learned what training at an elite level would look like. I learned how to find and recognize space faster for the benefit of my teammates and team. I learned that once I applied these newly learned skills along with the ones I had, I could preform at a high level. Ultimately, I wasn't chosen for the youth team and this taught me I had much more to learn.
  • Camp/Event
  • CSPA Camp
  • 6/24/18 to 6/26/18
  • Going to this camp as an incoming freshman I was welcomed to an entirely new realm of soccer, that being high school, college ready athletes as well as some of the tactics I should be expecting in the near future. I was also able to live in the dorms and learn how to socialize and work with completely new teammates. My player evaluation was done by Chase Robertson from Midwestern State University. "Keep figuring out how you fit into games and how you can affect things. I thought you did some good things on Monday, but there are definitely things that you need to improve on. Keep working on things and you will get better." The second bit of advice I got was from Marcelo Chapa at OLLU saying, "As a midfielder and forward try and keep the back line guessing. Work on those flashy skill moves and learn to switch it up. Look at players like Coutinho and Neymar and look how they use their skill for the better of the team."
  • Camp/Event
  • STXODP Training Camp
  • 12/02/17 to 12/03/17
  • Coming off of an offseason full of training and working on several weaknesses my Father and I had outlined beforehand, I was ready to show what I had improved on and really impress at these ODP's. Training with many of El Paso's talent I had done well. Crisp touches, accurate passes, and could see my improvement in 1v1 skill and physical attributes. However by the second, day my legs were cooked and saw by the list of players the coaches were taking with them, I had much to improve on.
  • Camp/Event
  • RCD Espanyol Training
  • 8/07/17 to 8/11/17
  • Being lucky enough to travel to Barcelona, Spain and work with an actual RCD Espanol Trainer for the week was a life changing experience. We lived like professionals, eating and staying at a five star hotel and training twice a day for a week. Very little players were chosen from all over the United States and Canada and I really got to measure my ability level and compare it to other players from around the Continent. I experienced what type of drills a professional soccer team would do on a day-to-day basis and felt I did well. I also learned to play and be around new teammates, coaches, directors, in a stadium, etc. I had hopes they'd ask me to stay, that this was the origin story everybody was going to talk about when I was playing pro. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and sent me on a new path. Made me look at what I could improve on and made me work at my flaws.
  • Camp/Event
  • AYSO Soccer Camp
  • 7/25/16 to 7/29/16
  • Coming off winning the league tournament in AYSO that spring I was excited to see what this camp was about. I also heard the coaches were from United Kingdom and coming over. The coach assigned to my group was Henry Faragher, who said he used to play in the West Ham Academy and having previously that month attended a West Ham ID camp I began to talk to him and we got along well. He challenged me and the rest of us to improve every day while also making it fun for us kids at the time. By the end of the week I had felt I did well, playing an integral role in winning the "World Cup." Henry gave me a congratulations and and evaluation saying, "Damien has displayed fantastic dribbling ability this week and has improved a great deal. Great feet and great attitude. Well Done!" It's safe to say my attitude was through the roof after not only winning the World Cup, but also developing a relationship with Henry and receiving a great evaluation. This evaluation is hung on my wall, reminding me every day that I am capable of great things.
  • Camp/Event
  • West Ham ID Camp
  • 7/04/16 to 7/06/16
  • Coming out of 6th grade and this being one of the first Camps I had attended I didn't' know what to expect. On top of that, I would be training against some of the brightest prospects not only in the state, or country, but internationally. I was taught to come out of my shell, to communicate on the pitch as they say. To be coachable, to work hard and play aggressively. Thinking back, this is the camp that really got me started on this crazy dream, giving me proper information, advice, a whole new perspective of the game, and a couple of scars on my legs for good measure.

Training

  • Athlete Specific Training at Top View Fitness
  • 2 years
  • Founders of Top View Fitness, Roberto Godinez and Joseph Iglesias have been hard at work in order for me to accomplish my dreams. I have made much progress, learning about hard work, perseverance and most importantly to believe in myself and the power my mind has over my body. I feel this has affected my game positively.
