I have been playing soccer since I was five years old and I have played at the classic level since the fourth grade. I love the game and am extremely dedicated to improving in every way I can. There are many reasons I love the game, including staying in shape and having fun, but my favorite part of soccer is the relationships I develop with my teammates. In my 2019-20 DA Varsity season, one of the most important things Coach Cochran would tell the team after practices or before games was, “Do it for the guy next to you on the field.” My DA Varsity team took this to heart and as a result was one of the hardest working groups, I have ever been a part of. Everyone held each other accountable but were also very forgiving. I knew that the team meant a lot to me, but I never knew how much I cared about it until the end of the season when we lost in the semifinals. I hear a lot of people say how great a team is or can be. Yet until athletes have the same experience, I was lucky enough to have, I do not think many athletes have a true understanding of team excellence. If someone would had told me before the season began that I would cry when the season ended, I would not have believed them. Experiences like what I had last year are why I love soccer. I thrive on the physical sport and the team dynamic. I am not ready to give that up after high school and would like to continue my playing career into college.
I keep my coach’s message, “Do it for the guy next to you on the field” at the forefront of my mind. For example, I never let up on my training and fitness. I take this seriously and continually work on it both on and off season. Julian Cochran, my Varsity coach at DA, always evaluates fitness as part of his tryout assessments. We run sprint series on one day and participate in the yo-yo intermittent recovery test on a second day. In the past two seasons I have not only been a team leader in these assessments, but also this August I reached a level 20.1 on the yo-yo test, a score my coach thinks might be one of the highest he has seen a DA player reach in the past 15 seasons.
