Growing up in Alaska, with an avid fishing family, it was necessary for my parents to teach me how to swim. They signed me up for swim lessons when I was four and I instantly fell in love with the sport. When I was six, I was fast enough to join the swim team and my career took off. I had tried other sports such as football and soccer, but none of them offered the same satisfaction as swimming. With swimming, you have time to yourself. This time could be used to deal with problems in your head, set and complete goals, or better yourself as a person and athlete. The older I grew, the more swimming affected my life. I made Junior Olympics and interacted with other swimmers outside of my team. As I qualified for more competitions such as North West Zones and North West Age Groups, I made friends from other states as well.
The highlight of my career so far would be breaking two relay records my freshman year. It was so special being able to make the “A” relay as a freshmen and forming a bond with my teammates. When we entered regions and broke the record the first time, there was an air of great determination between the four of us. We weren’t even nervous; nothing was going to stop us. That feeling has stuck with me and I strive to recreate that with every race. After the preliminary round of regions, we went on to break our school record 3 more times before the end of the season.
I am always eligible for sports and my grades have never dropped below an A in all of my school years; I plan to strive for this while attending college. Learning how to prioritize my day now, will help me later in college so I can focus on competing instead of struggling to learn how to study. Two of my main values are respect and trustworthiness. I’m not a person to make a promise that I can’t keep. I am determined and if you tell me I can’t do something, I will surpass your expectations. I believe my experience and love for swimming, along with my character and morals, make me capable of competing on your college team!
