Hi, my name is Jack VanHowe, and I am planning on going to college to further my education in order to make a positive and lasting impact on our society. I have not decided on an academic major but my interests revolve around psychology, criminal justice, and marketing.
Swimming has been a large and defining part of my life. I have been swimming for 7 years and love the competitive nature of the sport, the sense of accomplishment and the team comradery, especially on my high school team. Over the past 3 years I have been extremely dedicated to setting and exceeding my goals in the pool. At the end of my Sophomore year, I was one of the top backstrokers in the state of Michigan and was fortunate enough to set 2 new high school records.
I would make an excellent addition to a collegiate swimming program by using my positive energy and enthusiasm to help the team achieve their goals. And while I love surpassing my own goals, the success of the team is what I find most enjoyable. This past swim season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the highlight was our team’s 2nd place finish at our regional meet.
I have a strong value system and I have always put my academics above anything else. During my sophomore year, I challenged myself by taking 2 Advanced Placement classes which forced me to learn and grow more than I thought I could. I am very proud of my GPA 3.9 and I have to work hard to get those grades. My goal is to keep my GPA at this level for the rest of high school.
On the extracurricular front, I have been an active member of my school's student government since freshman year and was invited to join the National Honors Society. I have recently become a certified lifeguard and have been working as a lifeguard over this summer.
For athletics, I always push myself to get faster whether it's in the pool or out. While being a multiple sport athlete playing both football and tennis I have been very dedicated to swimming for the past 6 years.
