Military high school has taught me that the only way to be a great leader is to, first, be an even better follower. I especially learned this in JROTC since freshman year and also with two Leadership field trips to Camp Pendleton during sophomore and junior year. I thrive in a highly structured environment and will join an ROTC to keep a packed schedule. I also want to serve my county and honor my family tradition. Athletics, physical fitness and music play a big part of my happiness and overall success. In situations where others give up --this is not me. This does not strictly apply to sports. For example, as one of the only caucasians in a predominantly Asian Band Company at school, I was initially perceived as an outsider. By learning their language and gaining a deeper understanding of their culture (I lived in Xian for 6-weeks last summer with a NSLY-I merit scholarship), I was able to better understand their culture and achieve their respect and friendship. Some call me, "Wasian" when they could see how I could communicate with them in Mandarin (a 10-year+ commitment, which began in 2nd grade as a fun activity to keep my mind challenged). My favorite subjects are English and history, and would like to major in Political Science with a minor in Chinese. My ultimate goal is to make a meaningful contribution on a global basis as a diplomat and become the U.S. Ambassador to China. I am a flexible team player who can relate to just about anyone as evident with my diverse Los Angeles education in public school as well as being a peer counselor and class representative my senior year at Army and Navy Academy --an international military boarding school where I have become friends with cadets from all around the world. I face challenges, expect them, create a plan to overcome them, and will be successful despite the outcome. Even if it results in a loss, I know there is something powerful to be learned so it's like a win in its own way. For more information about me please visit: https://meritpages.com/maxmooradian.
