My name is Andrew Wise, and I am a student at Gardner Edgerton High School in Gardner, Kansas. I live in Olathe, Kansas, with my mom, dad, and my two dogs Max and Emily. Some interests I have are music, cars, and Legos. I am an A student who takes pride in his work. If there is a task to accomplish, I give my absolute best effort. This effort applies to my work on and off the court.
My goals for my college education are to major in biology or chemistry and go on to attend medical school. Currently, I am interested in pulmonary medicine, but that may change as I begin to explore different areas of medicine in my high school and college classes. I hope to receive scholarships for tennis and academics to assist me in achieving my hopes and dreams for the future.
While I love to learn, I have a passion for continuing to play tennis at the collegiate level. I have worked hard to build a strong foundation to get me to the next level. During my freshman year, I was a part of the varsity team competing in singles match play. Competing alongside my varsity teammates, who were all seniors and a junior, I quickly became accepted into the group. My tennis skills and team spirit made me a welcome addition to the team. My sophomore year allowed me to take a more prominent leadership role on the team. While our season was cut short due to COVID-19, I had still secured a starting varsity singles position. I am leader through hard work and performance. This was evident through my continued work throughout the shutdown. Even while the tennis courts were not accessable, I worked on my mental game, enrolled in a virtual training workshop, and even setup a makeshift net to practice serving in my backyard. This enabled me to come back strong during my junior year and play at the number one varsity singles position.
When it comes to my tennis game, people would say that I am coachable and consistent. I am always looking for ways to grow and improve as a player. While I am a member of my high school varsity squad, I am also a member of the High-Performance Academy at Elite Tennis. Through this program, I work on technique, gameplay, strategy, and fitness. I take lessons with a tennis professional and always request homework to work on in between lessons to improve my play. I compete in USTA tournaments and a summer junior tennis league. I have won or medaled in many tournaments and enjoy the challenge of competition. I take athletic development as a class in high school, which allows me to lift weights and work on my overall fitness level. In my athletic development class, I have been able to continue this athletic training year-round as I attend classes during the summer. I also take time to play matches for fun with the friends I have made through my love of the game.
I understand that tennis also takes mental finesse. I read books on how to use the mental side of the game to advance my level of play. I choose specific mental strategies to focus on and master before adopting another strategy. Through this, I have seen growth in my tennis performance.
Tennis is a part of who I am. Currently, my goal is to keep on improving and growing my tennis playing skills while working towards an opportunity to play tennis at the collegiate level. Getting a scholarship that allows me to play tennis while studying in college, receiving a medical degree, and getting a job in the medical field are my biggest goals in life that I plan to achieve.
