Hi, my name is Garret Lounsbury, and I am currently a junior in the class of 2024. I started playing tennis around the age of 8 at my local Tennis Club, but it wouldn't be until the summer of my 9th-grade year that I picked my racket back up again and decided to switch from lacrosse to tennis. I wasn't having fun with lacrosse, and my best friend convinced me to join the tennis team. That year after not playing tennis for over a year, I managed to play 1st doubles and made it to the semifinal of sectionals, where I lost to the sectional winners in a tight 3-set match. We lost by 1 point to our school rivals as a team, and they got to walk home with the medals. That Summer, I joined Alolo Tennis and made my way up to second singles for the 2022 season. This season would be the best our tennis team has ever done in the history of our school. Our team won sectionals and continued winning until we made it to the state semifinals being able to play at the Billie Jean Tennis Center.
The year prior, I got to watch the US Open, and the court I played on was where Daniel Medvedev was warming up the year prior. It was a dream come true, and I didn't think it could get any better. As a team, we lost to the State Champions in the semifinals, but the experience of playing on such a big stage helped my confidence and mental aspect of tennis. So after this massive accomplishment, I decided I was all in on tennis and decided to quit ski racing which I have doing long before I started tennis. That was a big decision for me and my family as it has been a part of my family and grandparents their whole life. But I knew how much I enjoyed playing tennis, and it truly was the only sport that I got excited to go to practice. between the summer of 2022 and the time leading up to our 2023 season in the spring, I played as much tennis as possible. It was hard to find competitive tennis tournaments around central new york without traveling to Albany or Bignamton, but we made it work. I had two private lessons a week and two clinics with my best friend and young adults. During this time, my passion for tennis continued to surge, and my goal of playing college tennis started to feel possible. However, academics have always had a higher priority than tennis. I have continued pushing myself with all the AP and honors courses available while maintaining a 95 GPA or higher.
College tennis is now my dream, and having upperclassmen and a close-knit group of guys to share experiences inside and outside of tennis would be an excellent way to spend my days at college. I am a hard worker, and more importantly, I listen with open ears and have been told I am very coachable.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement, and I hope that college tennis will be a part of my future!
