In elementary school, I skipped a grade which made me a year younger than my peers. That put me at a disadvantage in athletics and physiologically which was very demoralizing. I felt like no matter what I did, I wouldn’t be successful. But as I grew older, I realized that I wanted to prove everyone wrong. That is when I decided to set a goal doing a sport I love and set my sights on pursuing collegiate running.
However, I don’t just want to be a collegiate runner. I want to compete at the highest level on varsity and even represent my country in the Olympics. Some people have told me that I am dreaming, but I believe that people who don’t dream big won’t achieve big things, and dreaming big is the only way to do great things. I’m determined to do what it takes to reach my goals and I pride myself on being driven and willing to put in the hard work. My teammates sometimes think I’m crazy that I find the hardest workouts the most fun and rewarding. I have spent the last summer training with Alaska Nordic racing and now Alaska Pacific University Nordic ski team which I will continue to train with to continue to build and condition. I hope that through running in college I will be able to continue and improve through hard work and expert coaching.
Being part of a team has been instrumental in pushing myself to excel and also learning how to push my teammates as well to do better. I take pride in being a team player, enjoy the camaraderie you build with your teammates, and working together to achieve team goals. I think I have a lot to offer to a team, and I love helping others push themselves to unlock their full potential.
In addition to my athletic pursuits, I also take pride in my academics. I’m a straight A student and have taken/am taking multiple AP and honors classes. I feel I have been able to balance my academics and athletics and strive for excellence on and off of the race course. In addition, I also have a part time job at our local running store, Skinny Raven Sports. This has been a fun way to learn more about some of the equipment used in running and they are also heavily involved in the local running community.
I would love the opportunity to continue my running development while pursuing my college degree. I feel I have barely brushed the surface of my potential as I am still only 15 years old.
