I am Leo Nash and currently a junior in high school from Kansas City, Missouri. I am home schooled but take all my classes at Metropolitan Community College.
I started running when I was 10 years old at a Boy Scout fun run; even though I did not run the whole race, I had a lot of fun and was hooked. I began running regularly and competed in a few 5Ks. The next year I got the opportunity to run with the Kansas City East Lions and I have been on their team ever since. I enjoy running competitively and being apart of a team. I want to run in college because it lets me continue running cross country and track competitively.
In Boy Scouts, I have achieved the rank of Life and am working on my Eagle Scout project. In June 2019, I went to Philmont Scout Ranch where we rock climbed, hiked 77 miles over 10 days, and scaled 4 peaks. While at Philmont, I further developed my leadership skills by being the crew’s Chaplain’s Aide. In that role, I organized times for the crew to pray and talk about the day. The most difficult thing I did at Philmont was waking up at 3:00 am to hike 15 miles back to base camp on the last day. Waking up after 5 hours of sleep does not feel good. It did not help that I had to wait to eat breakfast until 7:00 am.
Volunteering is important to my family. Every Friday, I help out at a local thrift store where I do a wide variety of tasks from working at the front desk to checking if appliances work. I have learn how to correctly price items for sale and how to work the cash register. Once a month, I volunteer at the local food bank, Harvesters. There, I sort donated food and body care products, re-package produce, and put together bags of non-perishable food for school children. My favorite volunteer activity is help helping the elementary track team at practice. Each member of my track team is assigned a practice since it is difficult for one coach to supervise 30 kids. Volunteering at practice gives the high school student a chance to learn how to coach and meet the elementary team. I enjoy it because their practice include playing running games like tag which are not part of high school practices.
I have visited many colleges with my sisters and I have found that I want to attend small to mid-sized urban college such as St. Louis University and Drake University. I am currently undecided on my major but am interested in political science. I like to keep track of politics online and my favorite presidential candidates through the debates. I like Bernie Sanders because of his democratic socialist policies. Even though Sanders has been around for a long time, he has always been consistent on his ideas.
Since I am a free member of NCSA, anyone can see my profile but I cannot see you. I would appreciate it if you contacted me by email or phone so that we could continue this conversation.
