I earned my black belt in karate back in 8th grade. Not just “kid” karate but the classical form- Okinawa Te. I didn’t want to do it. At first my parents made me. The final test for the belt lasted 5 straight hours. But I did it. After all those years. The feeling of achievement, pride, and accomplishment was overwhelming. It was a light-switch moment for the things I could do with hard work and discipline.
I started track soon after in 8th grade and was bumped up to the high school team. The skills learned in karate helped to motivate me in track and academics (and life). I set the pole vault record for my middle school team and had decent times in a variety of events. The next year I qualified in the 400 for the Freshman New Balance Nationals for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. I’ve continued to work hard at bringing down my PR’s on my high school team and have had some success in the long sprints, both individually (I have the school record in the 300) and as part of our 4 x 4 team which holds the school record and won All Section honors. I’ve also tried to grow as a leader of my team and in the community where I am a lifeguard at the town pool. I look forward to being a major contributor and positive influence on my team at the collegiate level.
