My name is Nicholas Legaspi. I primarily run 400m hurdles. I also compete in the 110m high hurdles. My track and field career began in grade 9. I gained interest in the hurdle events at local high school meets and decided to try them. That year, I had success trying hurdle events at local high school meets and at the Provincial Championships (OFSAA). In grade 10, I had continued success in the hurdle events and competed again at the Provincial Championships. Due to my success in the hurdle events, I decided to join the Burlington Track and Field Club in the summer before grade 11. As a result of my involvement with the school track team and success at local and Provincial track meets, I have received my schools' track and field MVP award in grades 9, 10 and 11.
I was an AAA hockey player before I decided to pursue track and field. Due to my newfound success in track and field, I switched my focus from AAA hockey to becoming a full-time hurdler. Although I have chosen to focus on track and field, I continue to be a part of the hockey community. My involvement in the sport transitioned from being a player to a volunteer coach to an assistant skills coach and an on-ice referee. Since grade 9, I have been working part-time teaching skills in a coaching capacity. Also since grade 11, I have been working part-time as a hockey referee. In both roles; an assistant skills coach and a referee, I have been challenged to enforce rules, make decisions and be confident in my choices and the outcome. I am very fortunate that the flexibility of both these part-time jobs allows me to gain work experience while meeting my academics and athletic goals.
I take pride in being a student-athlete. Making sure my academics are in check while sustaining my training regimen. I have made my best effort to balance my time between school, track and work. Setting time aside for homework around practice and work has been vital to my academic and athletic success. I feel that my dedication and work ethic transferred over from hockey to track and field and in part, with practice, my Club Coach has played a major role in my success. I am excited about the future. I hope my athletic training and academic study can lead me to opportunities that can help me grow as a successful student and as an athlete.
