My name is Keito Newman and I am currently a grade 12 student at Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa. Athletics to me is a very important part of my life, it helps me stay fit and healthy as well as focused in class. I played soccer competitively till grade 10 and am currently the captain of the senior boys soccer team which will be making the trip to OFSAA (provincials) in 2020. I discovered my love for track and field during the school season in grade 9. Although I only trained with the school for 3 months, I was able to finish 5th at OFSAA in the 300mh. I decided to make the switch to competitive track and now train with the Ottawa Lions. During the 2019 season I was lucky to train with older, more experienced athletes who helped me push myself to my limits. I worked very hard during my first season as a competitive track and field athlete and finished second at OFSAA.
At school I make sure to be involved and do my best to improve my school for others around me. I am the student council co-president, a member of athletic council, a member of link crew and a peer tutor among the many other initiatives I take part in. Academics is very important for me, I always put school work before anything else and consistently get 90% average. I try and take leadership roles as much as possible because I know it will help me grow as a person and as an athlete.
I wish to attend a university that will allow me to continue growing as an athlete and as a student. I wish to continue giving back to the school and the community around me while competing at a high level. I want to always be learning and improving as a person throughout my whole life and I believe my experience at university should reflect that.
As I have only been training seriously for one year as a hurdler, I know that I have much improvement to make. I am working hard all the time to maximize my potential and know that I will continue improving significantly over the next few years. I can also run the sprint hurdles and finished 9th at OFSAA in 2019.
Over the winter thanks to changes in my training plan I had been improving exponentially in the 400m, I had split 50.5 in the 4x4 and consistently ran under 52s in training. Unfortunately due to COVID I didn't have a season however I'm more motivated than ever to prove myself now.
Thank you for considering me.
