My name is Jaren Sin and I am a part of the St. Francis High School Class of 2022. I have played on the Varsity level at St. Francis for 2 years and also played varsity at South Pasadena High School my freshmen before transferring. My first year at St. Francis, I led my team in assists and had the fourth most goals scored that season, despite playing only half the season due to transfer student protocols. I also helped lead my team to a 25-3 record, placing 1st in the Torrance Tournament and 4th in Mission League, placing us at the second seed in our division. Through those wins, we made it to the CIF semi-finals. Through our record setting season last year, we were moved up another division and hoped to compete for a title after roster and personal improvements. Unfortunately, the season was cut short due to COVID-19. I have also been playing with Rose Bowl Water Polo Club for 5 years. I have gone to Junior Olympics for 3 out of those 5 years, helping my team place 4th out of 45 teams. This past year, we were again hoping to play Junior Olympics but it was cancelled due to COVID-19.
I cannot say my love of water polo began on my very first game, but I knew I had found my sport very early on. Getting deliberately punched in the face would have persuaded many to reconsider playing. However, I loved the physicality of the sport, the camaraderie of teammates and the great exercise it provides without necessarily swimming thousands of meters staring at a black line. As a freshman playing on the High School Varsity water polo team, I learned a few important lessons. First, just because you are older, does not make you a better player. Secondly, being a leader on a team is more about Attitude than Aptitude. Lastly, good leaders lead by example both in and out of the pool. Wherever my water polo takes me, I plan to be a supportive teammate to everyone, lead by example in my words and actions and help foster a winning attitude for my team.
Although water polo is a big passion of mine, academics are something that I also love to challenge myself at and expand my limits. I have challenged myself with as many honors and AP courses every year of my high school career. I have always stayed on accelerated math and science courses, always being a year ahead of the standard class. I also love to expand my knowledge as a student and explore many new subjects, such as graphic design, web-design, and video production. I am also very passionate about business, astronomy (astrophysics) and technology, as I have taken online independent courses on these subjects to deepen my interest in these areas I would be interested in studying in college.
