I have been a competitive swimmer since kindergarten. In 2019 (my fifth grade year) I joined Lake Oswego Water Polo (LOWPO). The first practice was not something I wanted to repeat but since I had committed to the week-long trial, I showed up for the second day. After that, I ultimately was hooked. I went to the Junior Olympics that year on a combined Oregon Elite team. Over the last six years, I have competed in five Junior Olympics as a center 2M Defender, Utility and Point (Covid affected one year of those). I attend camps such as 6-8 skills camps and showcases, ODP camps and travel teams, workshops, tournaments, and any other training opportunities where I can further develop my skills and abilities. In 2021, I was invited to the Holiday Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and it was a pivotal moment in my water polo training. I attend Oregon City High School (OCHS) and was placed on Tualatin High School’s water polo team through a lottery placement since OCHS does not have a water polo team. I started my freshman year and played every single minute. That season I supported the four senior players with my great defensive skills. My Sophomore year had me pushing myself to move into a more offensive role and to help guide the younger players and non-club players as team captain. As I start my junior year, my focus will be on my shooting as well as continuing to push myself as a defensive player. I play water polo year round, train, and swim with the hope of playing at the collegiate level.
Being an athlete hasn’t always been easy. I have an excellent work ethic but was born with a hip disability that only allowed 9% mobility in my lower legs. I went to physical therapy once a week for nine years until my orthopedic surgeon felt I was far enough along in my growth for surgical correction (realignment of both of my tibias). Swimming was essential for my recovery and return to full mobility (I pushed myself and was only out of the water for two weeks, while my stitches healed). I know that my height is an advantage in water polo but I don’t take anything for granted. Hard work and physical demands have always been my “normals”.
I love school as much as I love water polo. I attended a bi-lingual, dual immersion program, from kindergarten through 8th grade. In High School I continued with Heritage Spanish & AP Spanish. I will earn my biliterate seal in Spanish upon graduation and passed the Spanish STAMP test as an 8th grader. I finished my freshman year with a 4.23 (weighted GPA). I took AP Human Geography and received a 5 on the test. My Sophomore year I completed AP Biology, AP Pre-Calculus, AP US History, and AP Spanish. I currently have a 4.63 (weighted GPA) and I am ranked second out of 445 students in my Sophomore class. I have been ranked first 5 out of 6 trimesters at Oregon City High School.
School and water polo have allowed me to do another of my favorite things: travel. I have been to Costa Rica five times. My first trip was at age five, then I spent three weeks going to school in San Jose at age nine to help develop my language. I have traveled once as a student in 8th grade and twice in high school as an assistant to the program director for 7th graders on a school trip. I have also been to the Netherlands, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Scotland, Ireland and England. I have competed on a water polo travel team that has allowed me to travel within the US and tour a lot of amazing college campuses while at tournaments. I hope to combine my love of the water, learning, and travel to become a Marine Biologist. My competitive nature, work ethic, and clear vision of what I want set me apart from most people my age. I have great support from my coaches, teammates, teachers, and family who are committed to helping me achieve my goals.
