As a freshman in high school, leading my team to state was one of the most memorable experiences of my freshman year. Our team connected through all the tournaments we played and dinners shared together. I value water polo, mainly because it is a team sport. I love bonding and building long-lasting relationships with my teammates through the sport and new experiences. I have played water polo for eight years. As I get older, my passion for the sport grows ever larger. I play for the West Houston Water Polo Club, also known as the Viper Pigeons. I have been to 5 Junior Olympics as a part of 2 teams (even playing goalie as a lefty for a team in need when my home team could not qualify - and we won bronze!) and I have been a part of ODP for three years representing the Southwest Zone.
Whenever I'm watching the game and whenever I'm in the game, I love to analyze what's going on, which sets me apart from other water polo athletes. I enjoy understanding what offenses or defenses we can run and the best way to score. I will go for the goal, but if there's a better option like an assist to my teammates, I will make that play instead. I've been known to get the whiteboard out during the game to help explain plays to run and mistakes made during the game to younger, less experienced players. Also, if I make a mistake, I will do my best to understand and adapt to what is suitable for my team and recommended by my coaches.
I enjoy the rigor of water polo along with the rigor of academics. Both allow me to push and better myself and grow physically and mentally; both have taught me the value of goal setting. For example, as a freshman, I wanted my name on the wall for school records, so I challenged myself to beat the school record for shot percentage. I accomplished that goal each year, starting as a sophomore with 67%. I achieved 69% in my junior year and am coming up on 85% in my senior year.
I value academics just as much as I love water polo – passionate teachers/coaches, life lessons, and active dialogue and challenge from my peers. Going into a fantastic water polo school is not the only thing I'm looking for; I'm also seeking the same high level of academics.
