I am Shayla Hurley from Calgary Alberta, I currently play as a starting Left Field with Bryant & Stratton VA. I have played competitive softball on a club travel team for 8 years and before that community ball for 2 years. I have been awarded clutch contributor for my travel team during our last full season in 2019. This proves that the team can rely on me and my success on the diamond in important games and tight situations. I play left field primarily and won defensive player of the year award during my sophomore year in college. I am pretty small at 5'3" and 120 lbs however this has never stopped me from excelling at the sport. Leading the teams on base percentage is also something I am proud of as well as having a very high number of stolen bases each season, in my sophomore year in college I collected 29 stolen bases with 0 pickoffs so my team can count on me on the base path. People have called me the Magician, because I seem to always magically find my way on base, as well as hurry hard because of my speed. I am a lefty hitter, however am also very good at bunting and slapping on the left side. In post secondary I am looking at going into some kind of art field/ major. I am very detail oriented and have an eye for the small things. I have been told by coaches that I am very coachable. Softball has been my primary focus for most of my life, I love the sport more than anything, the field is my happy place. I am a very friendly, likeable person with great range and just want to continuously get better in my sport, I am willing to try new techniques and just learn more everyday. I have also umpired before, I did this to get more time on the diamond in general and to learn the game from both sides of the plate. Usually I am found at the top of the batting order at either 1st or 2nd, this is because I can be trusted to go deep in the count, I am not afraid to take pitches and swing with 2 strikes, I am extremely confident in my ability to lay a bunt down as well which helps to start the game on a very positive note. I lead by example and help get the team going right away! My super competitive nature drives me to push 100% at each practice and game, I have developed great positive self talk to keep my head in the game and am resilient when it comes to an error and shaking things off. I love to support my teammates and just have a ton of fun!
