Awards and Activities

  • AwardsNational Honor Society, Honor Roll, Beta Club
  • ActivitiesI am really involved in Beta Club at my school and love giving back. We conduct 10 hours of community service during each semester. I recently went on my schools Beta Club Convention trip for the state of Georgia, which was held in Atlanta. I had lots of fun and hope to do it again next year. During the summer, Beta club also hosted the track event at Starr's Mill High School in which I volunteered and help serve drinks. We also worked the concession stand as well as collecting tickets at the Starr's Mill home basketball games. For the last 5 years, I have been involved in the IMPACT service project for my church. Last year we went to a neighborhood in Griffin GA and cleared out many trees, bushes, and removed a fence to help make room for a playground in their community. We painted a woman's wheel chair ramp and porch. These are the types of activities that give me great pleasure. I really believe we all can do more giving back in the communities that we live and work. This year gave me great pleasure working on a special needs home in Spalding county and a grandmother who lives alone. We cleared out the front and back yard where they had a lot of weeds, dead trees, and trash. We also layed a lot of sod in the yard as well as planting flowers. At the special needs home we painted the inside halls, bathrooms, and doors, cleaned windows, and a bunch of yard work to make it look nice. The reaction from the kids made this project even more special. All of their faces lit up when we talked to them. It was a great experience and I will definitely continue with IMPACT going forward. I recently participated in Respite Care through Heritage Church. We each got an assigned child and we got to spend 4 hours with them just to give their parents a relaxed day off. The child I got, Andy, was deaf as well as autistic. We both had so much fun playing ball, tag, and just laughing together I loved this opportunity and will continue to try and reach to help Respite Care. This summer I decided I would try something new, so I went on my church's High School mission trip, which took place in Asheville, NC and lasted a week. This year was a great start because I knew a bunch of the kids going and although I was a little scared at 1st it made me feel comfortable. We painted the entire inside & outside of the house, re-roofed, and did lots of yard work for one special lady. Her name was Emma, and she had lived in that house for 49 years. She raised 3 kids on her own in that very house. It rained part of the week while we couldn't always paint outside. So when this happened groups of about 2-4 people would go inside and just talk to Emma & tell stories about their families. We all became so attached to her, that when we left almost everyone had tears in their eyes, even Emma. This mission trip was awesome and I'm definitely going back next year. This Christmas 2012 my mother and I went to church spent all day making Italian meals so we could go Christmas eve to serve the homeless. While we were serving it made me feel really good and appreciate everything I have in life. Over this past spring break I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Belize. We left on Saturday morning at 3AM and got back Friday night at about 9PM. This week in Belize was the best week of my entire life. We arrived late Saturday night and stayed in a church in San Ignacio, where we stayed the entire week. The pastor and his family lived in this church also. Easter Sunday, we had 2 church services that we went to and we also went around town spread the word that we were going to have VBS on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, we came back, at lunch, and later went to the 2nd church service. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we put together a VBS for all the kids that wanted to come. We had a great turn out. We would play soccer from 9AM-10AM, then we would sing songs, share testimonies, do crafts, and act out bible scenes. At VBS is where I got very close to the kids. Every day after VBS we would go get some very simple cooking/eating necessities to provide to other families. We asked the church who would need the food the most and then we delivered it Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Our church split into groups, delivered the food, and just stayed and talked with the families for a while. This was also very touching because everyone who we delivered the food to was so welcoming and thankful for everything they have, while us, in America, are complaining over what we are MORE THAN LUCKY to have. We just don't appreciate things like people do in Belize, and many more countries. OnWednesday night we had to say goodbye to everyone after church. It was so hard to go and leave all the relationships you just made. Overall, the week was AMAZING and I'm definitely going back next year. on June 4th- 7th I participated in a church local mission trip called IMPACT. I have been doing it since 2007, and this year we painted a house, trimmed hedges, cleared out brush, spread mulch, and cleaned up where adults with special needs live. It was so nice seeing the change that we made in their environment. I am so thankful that I have a church that allows me to do this each year. It really makes me feel like I am making a difference and giving back in my community to people in need
