What I have learned as a young, student athlete?
I am extremely fortunate to have a family that supports my dreams of playing softball at the college level. My father has coached my club team since my second 10U season. The 2020-2021 season will be my ninth year participating in the sport I love. Some critics throw out comments like “daddy ball” or the “only reason you start at third base is because your dad is the coach”. In my situation, not the case. My older brother has a mild case of cerebral palsy. As a young child I watched my dad work with and encourage him to never give up, work hard and play with determination. In his senior year, he lettered in baseball. My brother is truly an inspiration and my role model. For me, dad being coach means I have to work harder than anyone else on the team. I have to earn my spot like any of my fellow teammates. What happens if I have a bad game, a bad attitude or am in a hitting slump? Coach pulls me, I sit the bench and I get moved down in the batting order. I am grateful for the endless hours and money both my parents invest into my sport and the softball community.
As a student athlete I’ve developed keen time management skills and am acutely aware of the need to balance school, practice and my social life. I take pride in my school work and maintaining good grades. I take honors and dual credit courses and have lined out my high school course load so I will graduate with a pharmacy technician license and a number of college credits. After high school I want to attend a school that will allow me to continue playing softball as well as get the education necessary to eventually become a pharmacist.
