My name is Gabrielle Whitsett, but for short my friends and family call me “Gabby.” I am 5’9, 16 years old, and my birthday is May 2nd. Currently, I am a junior at Walter M. Williams High School located in Burlington, North Carolina. My graduating class is 2020. I’m excited about graduating, but at the same time I’m a little bit saddened, because of its reminder that childhood is coming to an end. I realize that my final years of high school are preparing me for the next phase of my life.
My family includes myself, my mother and father, my older brother, and our Shih-Tzu, Princey. I started playing softball when I was five years old through the Burlington Recreations Department and continued to play until transitioning to middle and high school ball. I also played recreation, middle, and high school basketball but, have always known playing softball was in my blood. I come from a long line of family members from both my parents’ family, whom have played baseball and/or softball(not at college level), and as a child, catching and hitting came natural to me. I have a love for the game and, consider it, my favorite sport. I fell in love with the excitement that comes from tagging an opponent out, and batting. My strengths are catching, and hitting. I can play infield and outfield, but am stronger as an infield player. I can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, short, right and left field. I feel I am best at 1st base and short. I am confident in my ability to catch anything thrown to me and I am a power hitter. However, I am also honest that there are things, and skills I want to improve on. The thing I feel I need to work on most is not getting so down on myself after making a mistake. I want to always continue to grow and improve my skills.
I am an good student and I take honors classes. I was given the privilege of participating in the International Baccalaureate program (IB) until curriculum conflicts arose with the Academy of Finance (AOF) program that I have participated in since my freshman year, which caused me to have to make a decision between participating in one or the other. I am a member of FBLA, Academy of Finance, Key Club, and Dream Team, I have served as a football and volleyball manager. My hobbies include organizing spaces, arts and crafts, and bargain shopping. I love music, and I am adventurous. I am creative and I have an entrepreneurial spirit. I like creating power point presentations.
I am interested in pursuing journalism/broadcasting/mass communication. My ultimate goal is to become a sports broadcaster. I love sports and I would love to have the opportunity to play college level softball. Being able to play college-level softball is a great opportunity, and it’s an experience that I do not want to miss out on. I am excited about what the future holds for me.
