Personal Statement

My name is Kaitlyn Anderson, and I am a  sophomore at Blythewood High school, Blythewood SC. I am a 2024 graduate. I have been playing softball since i was 5, and I am absolutely in love with the game. I am primary second baseman for Blythewood JV softball, and I am also a utility player.

Growing up, I had always had a love for the sport. My older cousin played baseball and I played in the yard with him until I was old enough to tee-ball at age 5.   I played recreational softball until I was about 10 when I was offered a spot on Teiam Select Demarini. I played with them for about two years before deciding I needed a higher level team. I began to guest play with other teams and at one point I guest played for Coastal Tide Softball, under Coach David Hinson and Katie Hinson, and after two tournaments with them I was offered a permanent spot. This was around November-December of 2017. I have since devoted all of my time to softball and I’ve taken it very seriously. These two coaches had a major impact on the way I play and my outlook on the sport.  I played with them until 2021, when they decided they needed to focus on their daughters more before graduation. Since, I have joined the Lady Monarchs organization and have been playing with Legion  ball.

Ever since I began playing softball, my dream has been to play in college. I understand that there will be major discipline and it will be hard at times, but I am willing to take the risk and put forth the effort. Playing in high school has given me a glance at my future as my coaches tend to do things that they did while playing college softball. We condition, run, and sometimes go over basics over and over again in order to perfect our game. I continue to work daily to improve. I have always worked to be the best I can be, and do my best to be what coaches look for. A lot of times when I encounter different coaches (for example, when I moved schools, my new coaches labeled me as coachable, as well as my travel coaches and previous coaches.) I would say this is one very important trait in a player. Another big part of our game is attitude. I used to struggle with attitude and controlling myself when things wouldn’t go my way. Over the past few years I have realized most coaches will not accept bad attitude, and I‘ve watched girls get kicked off my teams for bad attitude. Ever since I realized this, I decided I needed to work on my mental game, and I have. I now realize that mistakes happen, strikeouts will occur, and all I can do about it is put it past me and get ready for the next play for the time being until I have a chance to work on it. I am a very self aware person, so I usually know what went wrong when it goes wrong and know how to fix it.

I realize playing in college will be hard at times, and I am ready for the commitment.
