Personal Statement

I have loved playing basketball since I first stepped on the court in second grade. After hitting my first three pointer, I knew basketball was my game. Over the past few years, I have focused on my goal of being a college point guard and team leader at a top all-around program. I have spent the last few years working in the classroom, weight room, and gym chasing my dream. I simply love the game and want to compete at the highest level.

What makes me different is something I was told by my AAU coach at a young age.  Namely that I see and play with the understanding of the bigger picture. In my own words, my coach was saying that I understand that this game is about challenging myself to always be better. That growth comes from making mistakes and growing from them. It is overcoming adversity that drives improvement. It is something even bigger than just scoring points and winning games.

My style of play is team-oriented and flexible. I have learned that basketball is a team sport and chemistry wins games. I am a true unselfish point guard with extended court vision who loves to distribute the ball to the open player. I am also a three point shooter with the ability to adapt to all different styles of play and types of players. I can play in a structured offense in a traditional point guard role, but can also lead and compete in the open floor as a playmaker.

My quiet determination is something that I consider unique to me. I have the ability to focus intensely and persevere through challenges. This will make me a great fit on any college team both in and out of the classroom. I bring energy, intensity, and a competitive spirit. I am also a leader. While I am easy to play with, I push the people around me to give their best effort at all times and to continue to improve towards a common goal.

My mental game is strong and I do not get rattled on the court. I want the ball in my hands when the game gets tight. I love making big plays when it counts! I play with a calm and steady style no matter what. Off the court, I am constantly thinking about the game, trying to find gaps in the team and in myself, working to communicate on where we need to improve and strengthen. I also read books like Mind Gym that build my mental toughness.

Academically, my parents have instilled in me the value of a good education. I have been fortunate to attend independent schools with great teachers and challenging workloads. I have become a hard worker who enjoys subjects like English and history. My  GPA at Lick-Wilmerding H.S. is a 3.7 unweighted. I also love playing the guitar and being with my friends and family. I hope to graduate from college with a major in exercise science or sports medicine. I am thinking about careers in coaching and sports medicine.
