College life is scary, but it’s a challenge that I’m ready to face head on. Though I am shy and my family and friends can attest to that, I’m also a fierce competitor who doesn’t like to lose. But that competitive spirit isn’t just limited to sports. I strive to learn and succeed in the classroom as well as the basketball court, tennis court, and in track and field. Yes, I am a triple threat athlete, but basketball is my heart. For my high school, I have been MVP of all three sports and a captain as well. But I’m also smart enough to know that a life after sports is best achieved at a great university who cares for their students. In my life after sports I want to work in sports medicine and help current athletes and future athletes recover, heal, prevent, and rehabilitate themselves from injuries.
Since I was about 5 years old that’s what I wanted to do. I remember the day vividly. It was a day like any other day, we had just left Denny’s having breakfast, we walked outside and me and my little brother was playing around. Out of nowhere his nose started bleeding. It seemed that it wasn’t going to stop. I quickly told my parents and they went into action to stop it. I grabbed tissue out of my mother’s pursue and tried to stop it too. As the blood gushed uncontrollably, my dad picked up my brother and ran him to the car. Me and my mom followed. In the car, my dad handed my little brother to my mom as he drove to the nearby hospital. We went into the emergency room and the doctors and nurses assisted so fast and nice. To me, on that day, they saved my brother’s life. I have never forgotten that moment or the impact it made on me. That feeling of saving someone has stuck with me and it’s a feeling I want to have as I save others as well in sports medicine. I know everyone says it, but I truly do want to help heal the world.
The reality of life is that an athlete’s time of playing only last so long so for me I’m seeking a school that will look out for my future and will be there for me after I’m done playing. The school that best suits my needs are schools centered around their education of their studentsand building a network of giving back and lifting up each other. Schools that have a long history of charity and being involved in the community really does excite me. I like giving my time to see communities grow and see people coming together. Being blessed with two parents who have shown me a lot about life and teamwork, I know I can fit in at any university and succeed in being a huge asset to the student body on a whole. I take representing a school personal and if given that opportunity you will realize that you have made the best decision by accepting me.
I know nothing is guaranteed in life besides death and taxes, but if you commit to me, I will give 4 years of greatness. At every level in my life, I have been successful either in the classroom or in playing sports. I have been league MVP for basketball. I helped my team win the league title, which hadn’t been done in over 20 years and have been voted on the 1st Team All-League every year. In my junior year, I was selected as an Academic All-American. But as good as I have been in sports, I’ve been just as good in the classroom holding down a 3.7 GPA. And if I came to your school, my story will only get greater with each year.
Sincerely,
Nia Rogers, Class of 2024
