Hello, my name is Skylyn Fagarang-Alalem and for as long as I can remember basketball has always been my passion. I strongly am looking forward to playing collegiate level basketball and taking the love I have for this sport further.
I played for Lahainaluna High School located on Maui, Hawaii for my sophomore and junior year at the varsity level. As a junior I started as their shooting guard and secondary point guard. The competition at the time wasn't very challenging due to our team being more experienced than others. Although, my junior season taught me a lot about being a leader. With the competition not being as skilled, I was able to take the opportunity to practice being the point guard and taking control of the court. When given this opportunity I was able to learn a lot about myself as a player. On the court I often focused on ways to give my teammates possibilities to score. I focused very strongly on defense and always seen defense as the way to winning games. However, I do manage to put up points myself. My junior season I ranked number 20 in the state for three-pointers made all season and made second team all star in my league.
During the summer I traveled regularly with my club basketball team from Hawaii for about 4 years. For the past two summer we went to many different tournaments and showcases. This summer I started as the point guard for my team and was able to take on the challenges of being the leader on the court against more difficult and highly skilled teams. It was challenging but learning the skills of being a leader previously during high school season, benefitted me in a variety of ways. I learned to be in control with the basketball and control the pace of the game.
Academically I am determined and always focused in the classroom. I prefer to work independently but am always open to working with others. I look forward to majoring in nursing to become a neonatal nurse practitioner and earning my Bachelors and Masters of Science in Nursing. I am always set on working just as hard in the classroom as I am on the basketball court.
