Hi, my name is Jayda Okuhara and I come from a school called Hanalani on the island of Oahu. My love for basketball started in 3rd grade as I watched and micmic the drills that my brother was doing at his practice. I have always been a competitive person since a very young age which has fueled me to not only challenge myself but also challenge others. After every game I’ve made it a routine to go back and look at game footage to see what I could’ve done better or which areas I can improve in. I played 3 years in intermediate and in our most recent season I helped lead my team to an undefeated season as well as a championship while being the leading scorer. As one of the leaders of the team I learned the importance of not only showing leadership while in the game but also while I was on the bench by cheering on and encouraging my other teammates. This past season I was also blessed to have made the varsity team as a 9th grader where we made a strong run for the state title. Over the years I’ve played both shooting guard and point guard; each position has taught me different lessons and skills. As a point guard I’ve learned leadership skills, while learning to improve my vision on the court to see the open person, and the importance of good ball movement. As a shooting guard I’ve been taught work ethic to get my shot at a high percentage from all around the court. I’ve also learned perseverance to have faith in my shot and trust my hard work. While I’ve learned all these things throughout in my basketball career I know that there is still much more for me learn and I’m so excited.
