My name is Colleen Ohrtman, I am a Junior at Shoreham Wading River High School, on Long Island in New York. I am a motivated and hard-working student athlete and one of my goals is to play basketball on the college level. I am looking for a medium size school, where I can be challenged both academically and athletically. I look forward to being part of a college community where I can experience new things and contribute in some way.
I have been playing basketball since I can remember, on CYO, AAU and school teams. I have always enjoyed the competition and the challenge of improving my skills. I have attended camps and also receive personal training, during which I work on shooting, ball handling and other advanced skills. I currently play on an AAU team through 3D Athletics, located in Holbrook NY, called DEVEL-UP. I primarily play the position of shooting guard, and have worked to develop my outside shot as well as my attack on the basket. I enjoy being part of a team and pride myself on being a supportive and positive teammate. I am very coachable and have respect for my trainers and coaches, and welcome any constructive criticism to help me improve my game. I also participate in Track and Field, running mostly short or mid distance, the 800m and the triple jump are the events I participate in most frequently. I come from a family of athletes and enjoy hiking, biking and swimming for fun as well.
As a student I am conscientious and work hard to learn and maintain excellent grades. I challenge myself with AP courses and have developed strong time management skills. I have had challenges along the way and have looked to my teachers for guidance and support. I am a member of the Nexus club, which is a volunteer group that does various community service events, such as visiting the local animal shelter. I have also volunteered at a shelter for homeless families, in their recreation program, planning and helping the children with activities. I have learned a lot from these experiences. I also play the clarinet in the school band.
On a personal note, I am the youngest of three daughters. My older sisters have both participated in college athletics, running on both the D1 and D3 levels. We are very close and enjoy traveling and relaxing together as a family. We love the beach, as Long Island has many beautiful ones, as well as venturing to the mountains upstate and out West. I have worked as a beach attendant, as well as a busser and hostess at a vineyard during the summers, and will be returning to the vineyard this year.
In conclusion, I am excited to begin my college search and look forward to finding a school that I will be able to grow both in my studies and as a basketball player. I hope to find a team that I can contribute to as a leader and teammate, where I can play and develop. I am open to all opportunities and am excited to connect with coaches through NCSA.
