Although basketball Recreation league do not get as much recognition as AAU, I believe those six years of co-ed Recreation basketball was a great influence in my life as a younger player. I learn to be aggressive on the court and to be a team player. More importantly I had to work harder to prove myself since I was the only female out of the ten teams. Once I started High school and AAU basketball I was able to be a huge contribute to the team. As a freshman starter on junior varsity we were undefeated for the entire season.
I’ve became interested in basketball because my dad played. My mom knew a coach at her job and suggested she sign me up for a league, since then basketball has become a personal Love. What I learned about myself through playing basketball is that I am a good learner when it comes to being coachable at all details of the sport. Being able to lead by example through hard work, dedication and not giving up is also something that learned but it also is an obstacle that I was able to overcome.
My academic goal for high school is to be as dedicated and do what it takes to succeed. That means to study more to prove to others and myself most of all that I can do my best not just in basketball. This academic goal will be the same for college but will more details as I get older because I know what a huge impact college is for my future and my career path.
The characteristics that I can bring to a team is my work ethics, coachability, and the ability to lead by example. Some of my skills that I have is my defense, my ability to drive to the goal and my mid- range shots. One of the most valuable skill that I have that is beneficial to a team is my court awareness. My instinct allows me to get open, be aware of my players’ position to obtain an easy basket.
Financial assistance is going to be very important to me in the college selection process since my mother is a single parent, I will have high need. I would be willing to travel farther to a school with less out of pocket expense.
