I can’t remember a time I didn’t have a ball in my hand—a dodgeball, a nerf ball, a softball, a tennis ball. I was the classic tomboy. Always running with the boys and playing games. I’m now 16 years old and not much has changed. I still love all things sports! One sport though completely stole my heart—basketball. I’ve been playing since I was five years old. I started in camps, school intramurals, and YMCA league. I joined my AAU team, the Carolina Hoopzters, at the age of nine. Finally, I started playing on my school varsity team in the seventh grade and I just finished my fourth year as a Lady Sabre. I can truly say I love this game. Yes, I have won awards and set records as a player. I have won and lost many games. I believe in my heart that I am a good player and I say that with all humility because I know I can be better. My athletic profile assessment indicates that I am a responsible and driven athlete, with good work habits and organization, calm under pressure, optimistic, focused on getting things done well, and pushing to accomplish goals. Some of my strongest performance traits are coachability, adaptability, mental toughness, composure and confidence. I play to win and have a truly competitive nature, but to me basketball is more than crushing your opponent.
Participation in team sports has taught me so much. Not only have I played varsity basketball for four years but I have played volleyball and thrown shot/discus in track for four years as well. Through sports I have learned discipline, responsibility, communication, accountability, loyalty, persistence and grit. I have learned the importance of teamwork, teammate support and friendship, and helping my fellow players find success. I have learned how to listen to my coaches and respect authority. Sports have shaped my character in so many ways. Playing multiple sports has made me more coachable since I’ve been exposed to different coaches and environments. They have also made me more adaptable to multiple positions. Playing multiple sports causes me to always remain competitive, looking for ways to improve and use cross-sport skills.
My family is so important to me. They have supported my dreams for so many years. My dad taught me everything I know about the game and is always telling me to “go do your shots!” My mom gives me all my emotional support and is always telling me to “take a break!” I think they balance each other out quite well. My older brother is my best friend and is always first to say “good job sis!” My older sister is on the autism spectrum. She has taught me about unconditional love and how all people on this earth are God’s beautiful creation. My faith is at the center of my heart. I gave my life to Christ when I was five years old and try to follow His teachings each and every day. I want to have a servant’s heart and love others as God loves us.
My studies are very important to me. I work hard to keep my grades and GPA up. Sometimes it’s a struggle and I get tired like so many young athletes, but I’m learning to work ahead, set goals and keep my focus. Things I’ve learned as a student help me as an athlete and vice versa! The arts have also been a big part of my life since childhood. I studied piano and ballet for 8 years. I believe this helped me in sports with my footwork, ambidexterity, timing, and discipline. I’m now in my fifth year of percussion in the school band program and I love it! Of course my dream is to play basketball in college. Since academics are very important to me, I want to find a school that has a great reputation for academics and athletics! Math and science are my favorite subjects. I hope to pursue a career in the medical field. I realize a quality education will influence my whole future so this is an important choice!
Playing basketball in college is an incredible opportunity that can be life changing. To be successful in school, sports, and life, you have to make sacrifices—whether it’s an extra hour of study or a little harder work in practice. I realize the commitment it takes to play in college is an ongoing process. It takes working hard each and every day. I’m looking for a school with a competitive athletic and academic environment that challenges me as a student-athlete, positions me well upon graduation, and allows me to represent my school for years to come.
