Life is a journey with problems to solve, lessons to learn, experiences to enjoy, and opportunities to take hold of. Being a National Honor, all “A” student, having my own nonprofit that feeds the homeless, being a coach for the 10U YMCA boys basketball team, being selected for Stephen Curry’s Underrated tour this spring, making the cut for the top 20 in the South, having the honor to be selected to promote the “BAMAZING” shoe and to be interviewed for my underrated story. Also, being a recipient of the Presidential Community Service Award with over 100 hours of community service are just a handful of lessons, experiences, and opportunities I have taken hold of in the past few years.
Another part of my journey happened when I began playing the sport of my dreams. I had to compete against the boys. At first, no one believed in me and no one wanted to give me a chance. I wasn’t selected for the middle school boys’ team because the coach thought I would characterize the team as weak. They kept me in the practice squad and I was only allowed to play two minutes the entire season. I was heartbroken and wanted to give up. But I knew I couldn’t do that. I continued to work hard and get better. Now I am a starter for the JV boys’ team, the first and only girl in my school’s history to do so, and a starter for my AAU team.
I still face a lot of adversity and obstacles on the court. During the school year, players and fans from other schools mock me during the games. Teams underestimate me until I start shooting threes, then they double team me. Referees question why I’m on the team at all. After the school season is over I switch to women’s basketball to play AAU, which has given me another perspective about the sport. I’ve been able to see all sides. My coaches now see me for who I am and the work I put in. They refer to me as “Dev Curry” and “the gym rat”. All of the challenges I’ve faced and continue to face have not only made me a better player, but they have taught me life-long lessons and have shaped me to be the child of God that I am today. I know any future challenges will only make me stronger.
I believe my academic, athletic, and community achievements match the vision of your college environment. It will be an honor to add future achievements to your campus and a privilege to be a part of your team. I know I am a diamond in the rough!
