Personal Statement

My name is Maggie Marino and I am a 27’ student athlete at Hardin-Jefferson (HJ) HS in Sour Lake, Texas. HJ has a strong basketball tradition with multiple state championships in both boys and girls basketball team. One thing that I learned at an early age from my skills coach, was to “embrace being weird.” When you’re playing basketball at a young age, it’s weird to talk on the court, to watch what you eat, to work out on your own, sacrifice your social life, cheer your teammates on and be vocal. All of those “weird things” may get you made fun of at school, but you know what I find weird, embracing losing by not doing those things—I’m ok being weird if it means winning! As a Freshman, I earned a spot on the Varsity. This feat was one of the most challenging battles of my life, but my Coach shared people make Varsity because they bring something to the table that makes our team complete. I feel that my strongest traits, what I bring to the table, is tenacity, high IQ play, defense-first, leadership, versatility (I play all 5 positions) to sum it up—I’m weird! Basketball has been a way of life to me, I love the camaraderie, competitiveness, learning, the workouts—I can’t get enough. From what I wear, how I act, to what I eat, basketball has helped mold me into who I am. Through basketball, I hope to have my college paid for and a chance to play competitively into my 20’s. Academically, I work just as hard as I do in basketball. One of my goals is to be valedictorian and so far I’m well on my way! I’m hoping to go into the medical field and work my way up to a Nurse Practitioner. Thanks for viewing my profile and considering me for your school’s team!

  • Marino not only created her shot under pressure but she also knocked it down with a hand in her face but in transition, her "stop and pop" pull-up jumper had me smiling. I kept smiling watching her body control as she attacked the basket and finished after contact, oh yeah, she dropped the 3 as well.

  • Recommended level of play (in our coach’s opinions): High Division II / Division I potential PLAYER EVALUATION: Maggie, we really enjoyed evaluating your game and watching you play in different game environments. We absolutely think you have a bright future with this game. Your shooting ability along with your ability to get shots off from various spots on the floor was excellent, especially for where you are in your career. Shooting is a skill that will be needed on any team, and it will allow you to carve out playing time for yourself in most cases. We also were able to evaluate your IQ and spatial awareness on the floor which is another important element. Having a good understanding and feel for the game with and without the ball in your hands will also help you become more valuable to any team you play on. As you continue to progress, build on the physical component of your game. Speed and physicality are going to increase as you ascend in level of play and being best prepared for that will be a huge part of your maturation process and also be indicative of how your early time at the college level could go. We think your basketball foundation is really strong so continuing to build on those aspects will be important. Also, watching yourself on film to be able to evaluate things that give you trouble during games would be valuable as well.
