Hello, my name is Olivia Holman. I’m in the graduating class of 2021, and I attend Ballard High School in Seattle, Washington. At Ballard, I made the Varsity basketball team my freshman year. Through hard work all season, I was able to maintain a starting position. This was an honor for me, as the Seattle Metro League that I compete in is very competitive. At the end of freshman year, I was appointed to the All-Metro Freshman Team, and was nominated for a Rookie of the Year Award at Ballard. As a sophomore, I continued to grow and work hard, competing and giving 100 percent in every game and practice. Both my freshman and sophomore seasons we placed 4th in the Seattle Metro League.
Besides basketball, there are many other programs and clubs that I participate in, including a science academy called BioTechnology. This is a three year academy that allows me to feel like I am in a small classroom setting, and I am able to experience hands-on science procedures and equipment. I am also a member of DECA, which is a business club that competes in fun and interactive role plays. Business is something that I feel a lot of passion for, and would definitely consider pursuing that major in college. Another program that I am active in is Link Crew. Link Crew is a mentorship program for incoming freshman classes at Ballard. You are a leader to a group of freshman and help ease the transition from middle school to high school. It is something that I really found to help me during my transition and it is very cool to see the excitement of what lies ahead for the incoming freshman and how to guide them. Lastly, in my junior year, I’m going to be joining the Academy of Finance. It is a two year academy that explores the depths of the business and financial world. I couldn't be more excited to participate.
Aside from all of my school and extracurricular activities, there is a lot more I like to do. I enjoy hanging out with my friends, having picnics, baking, and spending time with family. Some words that I really like to live by when it comes to basketball, is “ Basketball is about finding the best possible shot for the offense”. This quote comes from one of my AAU coaches Duane Hodges. When he said this, it immediately stuck with me. It’s something that I am always thinking about when on the court. Another thing that has stuck with me is when my coach Steve DiPietro said, “Just play basketball”. I like this because even when there are things you can’t control, all you can do is focus on the game, relax, and play basketball.
