It has always been my dream to play in college. That dream started on the sand court with my mom and her rec games when I was 5 years old. This is my fifth year playing club for indoor and beach, and my love for the game has only grown through my improvement as a player and being a leader on the court. In the summer I work as a referee for a local beach volleyball facility and practice beach volleyball year-round with Wilmington Beach Academy. My coaches throughout the years have relied on me to be a versatile leader for my team because of my positive energy on the court, whether we’re ten points down or in a point for point situation. My goal is continuing to grow as a player and leader at the collegiate level.
When I visualize my goals, I make them happen. Last year, my goals were to make varsity as a sophomore and to make the 16 National team at my club. I accomplished both goals even though I fractured my ankle a week before club tryouts. After breaking my ankle, I had to prove to myself and my coaches that I would become stronger than I was before and be a vital part of the team. Two tournaments into the season, I’ve played every game and been relied on by my coach to be a leader on the court and bring my teammates up when they’re down. I am a vocal leader on the court and my teammates look to me when they’re down because they know I’m there for them. My coaches look to me to control the energy on the court and motivate our team to play together and to the best of our ability. My IQ of the game allows me to make smart, fast decisions about where to put the ball to give my team the best opportunity to score a point.
Overcoming the obstacle of a major injury motivated me to become stronger physically and mentally and to make injury prevention a priority. I work out twice a week with an athletic trainer and have grown to love and respect the field of athletic rehabilitation and want to pursue that degree in college. My injury taught me just how much I love this sport, and that I will train and practice as hard as I can to reach my ultimate goal; playing in college.
