My name is Carissa Freeman and I am currently a senior at Grossmont High School in San Diego, California, Class of 2022. I am currently interested in majoring in Psychology, but I am also considering other majors.
I have been the number one ranked player on the varsity golf team at Grossmont High School since my freshman year, and I was named team captain this year as well as in my junior year. In my sophomore season of 2019, I placed first in the Grossmont Valley League, made First Team All League, and was a proud recipient of the Breitbard Athletic Award for Athlete of the Year. I have medaled in almost all of my high school matches since I was a freshman. In my freshman year, I was the first female golfer at my high school to make CIF since 2003, and I have made CIF every year since I was a freshman.
In June 2021, I shot my personal best of 69 in a junior golf tournament at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos, CA. In September 2021, I shot my personal best in a high school golf match shooting a 34 at Singing Hills Golf Resort in San Diego, CA (9 holes). On September 29, 2021, I took first place at the Olympian Girls Golf High School Invitational at the Chula Vista Golf Course, where I shot a 72 (one under par, 5,419 yards). In October 2021, I played in the Grossmont Conference Championship/Finals and won 1st place, shooting a 38. The week prior in the League semi-finals, I shot a 36 winning 1st place and was named Player of the Year. I am currently ranked #21 out of 296 girls for CIF, San Diego Section, Fall 2021. I continually strive to improve my scores and my game each time I play.
I try to be a leader on and off the golf course. On the golf course, I help out newer golfers on the team who have never played before, not just with their physical game, but with their mental game as well. Off the course, I participate in school activities such as the program “G-Crew” where I help with freshman orientation, I volunteer at a local food bank during the holidays, and other activities. My greatest assets as a golfer are my patience, determination, love for the sport, and drive to become a better player. I always try to improve all aspects of my game, so in addition to taking lesson, practicing at the range, signing up to play in multiple-day junior golf tournaments, this past summer I played 18 holes every Thursday with 3 other high school girls, and try to play on as many weekends as possible. In addition, I play 18 holes with my dad and his friends to get some practice in as often as I can.
I have been playing golf since I was 7 years old, taking lessons and playing in junior golf tournaments from Chris Smeal, founder of Future Champions Golf (FCG). Chris has helped more than 130 of his students get college golf scholarships. Since I was young, my parents have always told me “whatever you do, be the best at it and never give up.“ I have always taken that advice with everything I do...golf, school, softball, volunteering, etc. I have had straight A's since my freshman year and I continually push myself to be the best in everything I do.
Thank you for reading my personal statement. I am hopeful you will take the time out of your busy schedule to view my highlight video. Please contact me if you have any questions, and feel free to contact my high school golf coach, Carmelina Pantoja, at [email protected], or my swing coach Chris Smeal at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Carissa Freeman
