I walk up to the first tee box with a nervous feeling in my gut. I felt confident, but it was the regional tournament and I knew I had to do well if I wanted to go to state. I swing my driver confidently and the ball sails to the middle of the fairway. I finish the first hole with a par. I was assured I would do well that day. After the first nine I am in fourth place shooting a 41. I knew I needed to pull it together if I wanted to place top three at regionals.
The back nine begins and I finish hole 10 with another par. I focus on all my shots so I can make my goal possible. On hole 13 I chip in for birdie, which allows my objective to be in my reach. I finish the last hole and I see that I shot a 38. My eyes widen as I realize that's the first time I shot in the 70’s. My fingers touch the leaderboard button on my phone. I am placed second.
At this moment I was very proud of myself. I put in the work and achieved the goal both my coach and I set for myself at the beginning of the season. I realized that if I desire something and put my mind to it I will be able to accomplish anything I want. Ever since that day I have been working hard to complete my goals one at a time and each time I set them at a higher standard. Placing so high made it clear to me that I can achieve a high standard goal when I focus on it. I know I couldn’t have done it all myself, so I have become even more appreciative of all the people that spent time with me and helped me improve my game. Golf has been the center of my attention for almost 4 years now and because of that I am able to lower my scores and be a better athlete in general. This makes me think that I can make a future out of this game.
I know golf will affect my life indefinitely and I plan to pursue this sport in the future. I have prepared myself to play at a collegiate level and hopefully further it from there. Whether that be a coach for high school, personal trainer or even golfing professionally. I believe that if I keep putting in the work like I am, becoming a professional will be a big possibility. Golf has done so much for me and it has been a big dream of mine to play at such a high level.
People have always told me golf is a sport you can play for the rest of your life. That's why I want to encourage others to participate in it as well. It has taught me so much and rewards you greatly when you push yourself. My life revolves around this sport, I hope to pursue no matter how that may be.
