My name is Kate Khvorostiana, and I am a rising senior at Ransom Everglades High School. I currently reside in Miami, but I was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, along with my younger brother and both of my parents. My family and I immigrated to the United States in 2016, just before the start of my 4th-grade year. Due to a difference in age qualifications between the two countries, I grew up being the youngest in every grade which has only taught me two things: responsibility and determination. Regardless of being at that disadvantage, I have continuously shown to be an extremely dedicated worker in all fields of study, most definitely in combination with my interests. I am an avid participant in many of my school's clubs and activities, often spending my free time writing articles for the school newspaper or traveling to various universities for Speech and Debate national tournaments. In recent years, I have combined my athletic interests with my academic ones to advance my field of knowledge. Everyone knows the phrase "student-athlete" meaning the balance between school/golf, however, for me it means combining the two to further grow as an athlete and a scholar. Starting to play golf opened up ways to give back to my community and make the golf industry better through my contributions. When my mom first signed me up for weekend classes as a small hobby, I did not have high expectations for the hobby to grow into something more. I joined a local "First Tee of Miami" chapter at the age of 10, where I was exposed to many other aspects of golf. From joining a "Girls Golf of Miami" leadership committee where I served for two years to conducting many different service projects. Aside from learning how to play, I was involved in various projects such as Thanksgiving Food drives, Special Needs Golf Clinics, and partnerships with non-profit organizations (ex: Miami Lighthouse for the Blind). Once reaching tournament level playing, while I didn't participate in clinics as much I would always be an avid volunteer and leader whenever needed. Having this experience as a whole, opened up many doors for me in the golf world and I wouldn't be where I am without itIn my golf journey, I have discovered the importance of values such as perseverance and responsibility. Regardless of bad playing days or times when unforeseen circumstances limited my playing abilities, I have learned to never give up and only push further.
My current goals are to keep up with my academic success in advanced coursework such as classes A.P. Comparative Government, A.P. English Language, A.P. World History, A.P. U.S. Government, and more. While I struggled my first two years of high school, I finished 11th grade with a year GPA of 3.89 while also staying engaged in my community and taking advanced coursework. In all aspects of my life, I enjoy participating through volunteering opportunities and leadership positions which allow me to grow as a person by working with others which I hope to continue. Entering my senior year, I will be captain for the second year in a row on my high school golf team where I will strive to lead by example and have a successful last season. I have been working hard on strengthening my golf technique and one of my biggest goals is to have good course management and becoming a more consistent player in my competitive rounds. I continue to challenge myself in both parts of "student-athlete" and hope to do so throughout college as well.
