My name is Sydney Harrington and I'm from Lakeland, Florida. I have been playing golf my entire life, but I really fell in love with the game in high school. I am a part of the Lakeland High School girls golf team and each year we have made school history because of the amazing talent on our team. For me, golf is something that I have come to love because of the safe haven it offers and the character it builds. When I say that I am a golfer, many people understand that as I play golf. To me though, I see it as a personality trait that has become a part of my identity. The mental fortitude needed for golf has translated into my everyday life where, to me, everything is a competition with myself to put my best effort forward. Golf can be a very draining sport because the effort that you put into training does not necessarily come out as an equal output. But when it does, the rewards are unfathomable. I experienced these feelings for the first time over this past 2020 year when I started off the year by making a hole in one at the PJGT Then, over the summer, I finally broke 80 by shooting 78 at the Eagle Creek Open. Not long after, I shot 76 at the High School Invitational Crutchfield Hawkins and secured the 1st place win for my team for the first time in our school's history. I continued to show my strength over the season even when it came down to the most stressful experience of my life. At regionals, I was the last group and my team was currently tied for first place. According to live scores, I had to par the last two holes for my team to win and qualify for states. I did just that and posted an 80 to beat Windermere by one shot.
Not only does golf have a competition based aspect of my life, but also does it have an even greater impact than on me myself. I volunteer at a local Country Club where we teach the amazing sport to the future generations. It’s a great way to earn service hours but it also opened my eyes to the reality that the young golfers look up to me and strive to be like me one day. Thinking about how my love for the game has inspired the future generations of golfers has helped me to come to the conclusion that I want golf to remain a part of my life for as long as my life lasts. Collegiately, I want to play golf at a place where I can have fun and continue to nurture my love for the game. I want to be competitive but academics are my number one priority. I may not be capable of shooting incredibly low scores at this moment, but my love and dedication to the game and its future make me a stand out.
