Personal Statement

Hi! My name is Mia Hirashima, and I am a junior at Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Golf is a sport I have been playing ever since I can remember. I have tried sports like taekwondo, volleyball, and gymnastics, but golf is the one sport that truly stuck. I love the mental aspect of the game. Golf made me realize how there is always room to improve and how hard work and practice leads to improvement. This summer is my second year playing tournament golf and it's been a fun and amazing experience. I'm learning the importance of translating my practice rounds into effective tournament rounds, by being mindful of course strategy and consistency. I've learned that tournament golf is more than hitting perfect shots, rather it is having confidence in myself before every shot.  I have known I wanted to play college golf ever since I started playing tournaments around two years ago, and I have dedicated countless hours of hard work and practice to hopefully reach my goal. I love cheering on my friends and competitors, and I am looking forward to being part of a supportive team. Overall, I am a hardworking player, who stays calm on the course even when facing a challenge. Thank you so much for your time!

  • I recently played in the OIA (Oahu Interscholastic Association) Hawaii Public High School Championship at Pearl Country Club (6223 yd). The players represented the top 32 girls in the OIA based on their season scoring average. I shot 78, 73 (+7) over the two days, placing 7th. The first day I was very happy with my chipping as I was able to get up and down a lot. I am also very proud of how I came back after the first day. The second day conditions were tough as there was wind at speeds of 25 mph with gusts of 35, a heavy downpour as I was preparing to warm up, and rain as we played. For the first seven holes I was two under with two birdies. On the eighth hole I missed my driver right in the palm trees, but I was able to punch out and make it on to the back of the elevated green. When I putted I had a complete brain fart and four putt from 40 feet for double bogey. I left my first putt short of the ridge going down to the hole. This was the first four putt I ever had in a tournament and I was super angry at myself. I parred the next hole, but as we made the turn it began to really rain and I had bogeyed 10, 11, and 12. While it was not the start I wanted on the back nine, I ended up hitting 12 greens. I persevered and birdied both 16 and 17, while also parring the rest of the holes coming in (13, 14, 15, and 18). While I did miss a lot of birdie opportunities, it is just more motivation to work even harder on the green. I learned so much from this tournament as I was able to play through tough conditions and I learned that I can come back after a stretch of bad holes. I realized that I did better at calming myself and was able to be in the present during the round.
  • Camp/Event
  • Notah Begay III Girls National Championship Southern California Regional Qualifier
  • 8/16/22 to 8/17/22
  • (75, 79) +10, 5th place, Girls 14-15 division. I was fortunate enough to play in the Notah Begay III National Championship Southern California Qualifier at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon Champions Course. The first day I had an afternoon tee time, which was unfortunate because the heat was pretty extreme last week. The first nine I played well, shooting an even 36, hitting 6 greens and 14 putts. On the back, I started to feel very nauseous as it was getting hotter and hotter. The last four holes were probably the worst I had ever felt on the golf course, and I eventually had to vomit on the seventh and ninth hole. It was getting hard for me to keep going because I was getting dizzy when I was swinging the club, but I am proud I was able to finish the first day strong with a par on the last hole. The first day I finished with a three over 75 (36,39), and while I could have finished better I was super proud that I pushed through and finished the round. The second day, I had an early morning tee time and still felt nauseous from the previous day but it wasn’t as bad as the day before. The first nine was definitely not good, I had two doubles and a triple. I also had one birdie on 11, and missed a 3 foot birdie opportunity on hole 13. I was just missing in all the wrong places, and didn’t capitalize on a lot of opportunities. I was very disappointed in myself, and told myself that on the back I was going to come back strong. The first four holes I missed the green three times, but got up and down every time for par. On six I bogeyed, but fought back the next hole hitting my approach within six feet of the hole, and made the putt for birdie. I finished the back nine with an even par 36. I was super proud of myself because in previous tournaments, if I shot a bad front nine I would play worse and worse. However, this tournament I was able to finish strong and come back from my terrible front nine. I learned a lot from this tournament, and with every new experience I am gaining more and more confidence in my tournament play. I will continue to work hard on my mental game, and lowering my tournament scores.
  • Camp/Event
  • Optimist International Junior Golf Championship
  • 7/24/22 to 7/29/22
  • Came in second at long drive competition, finished T48 and made the cut, with 83-77-81. I qualified to compete in the Optimist International Junior Championship. It was a great experience, and I took the advice of the coaches at the Oregon camp to stay positive on the course. While I struggled the first nine, I bounced back on the back nine to finish strong. It was one of the longest days of my life because we had weather delays all day. I was the very first tee time, and there was really bad rain and lightning all day. There was a huge rain downpour on hole 11, and a lightning warning so we had to suspend play for around four hours. It was definitely an experience I will never forget, but I was able to complete the round (which took 12 hours with waiting and delays). The second day I played well with a five over 77, but I was disappointed because I had so many birdie opportunities that didn’t drop or lipped out. The third day I had a very tough time because on the front nine I completely lost control of my strongest club, my driver. I went in the water on six of the first nine holes, and had trouble hitting it where I wanted it to go. On the back I figured out I was moving my head a lot and that’s why my driver wasn’t going where I wanted it to. After that, I turned it around and played easy golf for the last nine. Although I didn’t score how I wanted to, I am very proud of myself because I finally learned how to turn my round around when I have a streak of bad holes. I learned that if I relax and enjoy the round instead of being scared of messing up a shot, I will play better. Because this is only my second year of playing tournament golf, I am finally starting to learn how to use my nerves in a positive way and calm myself down. I am very grateful I was able to go to the golf camp and Optimist because I learned so many valuable things about myself. I have had trouble with my confidence on the course, but hearing positive words from the coaches at the Pac-12 camp were very encouraging. Also, I came in second at the long drive competition at Optimist! I came in third at the preliminaries with a drive of 259yd, and came in second at the finals with a 229yd drive!
  • Camp/Event
  • Nike College Showcase Camps, Pac 12 Girls Golf
  • 7/23/22 to 7/24/22
  • I went to Oregon to attend the Pac-12 Nike Golf Camp. The women’s golf coach from the University of Oregon and Duke attended, as well as the assistant coach from Dallas Baptist University. I was also able to get help from men’s coaches from Washington State University and the University of Arizona, as well as the Stanford assistant coach. I learned a lot of valuable information about my golf game and the recruiting process, which I am very thankful for.
  • Camp/Event
  • HSJGA Oahu Junior Classic
  • 7/12/22 to 7/13/22
  • 6th place, 78-76 (par 73 6040 yards) This tournament I gained a lot of confidence. As it is only my second year of tournament golf, I am still improving at calming my nerves before each shot. However, this tournament I could feel my practice translating to my tournament play. The first day I was playing really well, I just had unfortunate breaks with my ball going in the water three times. The second day, I played cleaner, and improved from the day before with no balls in penalty areas. I was able to stay confident, and although this still isn't my best, I can tell my tournament play is improving.
  • Camp/Event
  • Manoa Cup
  • 6/20/22 to 6/23/22
  • 113th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club (Match Play) - Qualifying Round: 76 (38, 38 Par 73) 12th seed - Round of 16: Won 2 up (75) - Quarterfinals: Won 1 up (76) - Semifinals: Lost 6&4 to #1 seed Raya Nakao This tournament was a great learning opportunity for me because I was able to play against the best players in the state. I stayed in the moment on every shot, and played hard until the end. The conditions were tough with the many hills and off and on rain, but it was a really good experience to test my skills on a difficult course.
  • Camp/Event
  • USGA Girls Junior Amateur Qualifier
  • I played in the USGA Girls Junior Amateur Qualifier today. It was held at Kapolei Golf Course and I shot 74 (+2). While it wasn’t enough to qualify, I am happy with how I played. I hit 12 greens and had 29 putts, however, I also missed two 5ft putts for birdie. I have been working hard on my chipping and putting and it is great to see that my hard work is starting to pay off. I will continue to work at my short game and I am looking forward to my next tournament, IMG Junior Worlds!
