My name is Annika Johnson and I will graduate from Valparaiso High School in 2020.
My ultimate goal is to be a collegiate student athlete. I am seeking a school that will help propel me into a competitive law school following graduation. At this time, the geographic location of the school does not sway my opinion. The right fit for me is a school with a strong academic reputation that gives me an opportunity to compete for a participating role on the golf team. I aim to play at the highest level of collegiate competition that my game permits. This year as a sophomore, I earned a varsity letter by competing in all but one varsity event and was able to have a contributing role on a state finals qualifying team. I registered several counting scores during the regular season and a highlight was shooting my personal best (89) at the regional meet and securing our team’s advancement to the state finals. The state finals was a pressure packed experience on a difficult 5,800 yard course where I shot 104 on day one and improved to 96 on day two.
Everyday, I work hard to improve myself in efforts to become the best student, golfer, and teammate I can be. Outside of the high school season I play 18 hole tournaments on the Northern Indiana Jr. Golf Association (NIJGA) and Indiana Jr. Golf Association tours. Not only do I compete in tournaments, but I take lessons from a private coach and hit balls on the practice range whenever I had a chance. This coming spring and summer I will add to my schedule events on the Hurricane Tour. I continually push myself to maximize my abilities. I accomplish this by being organized, reliable, competitive, accepting to instruction as well as criticism, dedicated to completing tasks, communicating and advocating for myself, and prioritizing commitments. As a high school student athlete I have already learned the importance of strong leadership and balancing time. I am a leader amongst my peers and express this through a selective school club that mentors elementary and middle school students. Secondly, I work a part time job with a clothing company, this has been valuable in educating me on real world communication, competition, and time management. As a collegiate golfer I will be a supportive teammate, lead others by example, committed to academics, and dedicated to improving my golf game.
